A LOOK AT THE MAKEUP OF MINNESOTA'S BRIDGE COMMUNITY
As of the May 2025 masterpoint cycle, Minnesota has 1,439 "active" bridge players ("active" meaning they've played in an ACBL sanctioned game within the last three years).  Unit 103 has 818 of these players at the table, Unit 178 has 621 of them.  But of more importance might be where all these Minnesota players are in their bridge journey.

Almost two-thirds (63.4%) of Minnesota players have yet to reach their Life Master.  Which means they're striving to get to that goal, trying to learn more about the game, and making an effort to be engaged.  Help them out.  That (in turn) will help you in the long run.

5th NEW LIFE MASTER FROM THE GOPHER
Keep them coming!  A fifth player who made their Life Master rank at the Gopher Regional last week has come forward - that's Rebecca Wooden [St Paul].  Rebecca picked up 13.35 gold points last week to cross the line, along with 0.97 red masterpoints.  The last day of the tournament, she played in the Open Pairs with Gerald Flom [St Paul] and came in 3rd overall in the "C" flight for 2.83 gold points and enough to order the celebratory cake.

Congratulations to Rebecca, who joins Gail Baev [Woodbury], Gregory Dorr [St Paul], Earl Conner [Woodbury], and Florian Lauer [St Paul] as "Gopher 2025 LM Club" members.  Nice club!

TEAM STRATEGY FOR THE SURGING IMPs GAME
If there was ever any doubt that team play is making a comeback, look at the Gopher Regional this month.  Prior to the introduction of COVID, team games at the tournament were running around 32% of all tables.  In the post-COVID world, the Gopher has seen a significant increase in the number of team tables in play - especially as a percentage of all tables at the tournament.  This year team tables were almost half of all tables in play!
Thankfully, Steve Gaynor [Arden Hills] has provided some insight into the strategy for teams play.  Just to the right of the Gopher tables chart is a look at some of the tips Steve has put together for improving your teams play.  Click on the image or click here to open his instruction in a new window for viewing or printing.  Teams are back!  (Oh, and the type of scoring for teams play is called "International Matchpoint Scoring" or "IMPs".)

UNIT 103 RENEWS "C" PLAYER GAME REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM
One of the Unit 103 Board decisions last week at their Gopher Regional meeting was to renew their Flight "C" player game reimbursement program for the North American Pairs and Grand National Teams.  The reimbursement isn't to the players directly - but rather to clubs that hold stand-alone Flight "C" games in these competitions.  Unit 103 will pay all table fees for dedicated Flight "C" player games (up to 30 total tables in each of the NAP and GNT).  The purpose is to encourage more clubs to hold Flight "C" games in these events; last year (in the first year of their club reimbursement program) the program helped spur more participation of these players.

North American Pairs Flight "C" tables in Unit 103 clubs was 46.5 tables (up from 24 the previous year); and Grand National Teams Flight "C" tables were 15 tables (up from 0).  Frequently these intermediate/novice players feel more comfortable playing with players of their own skill-level, and if your club wants to run these games at no cost to the club, check with your club director or manager.

NON-LIFE MASTER SILVER POINT EXTRAVAGANZA
Calling all Non-Life Masters!  Rochester is holding a one-day silver-point sectional for players who are NLMs and under 750 masterpoints.  They'll have two sessions next Thursday, June 5th, at St Luke's Episcopal Church in Rochester.  It promises to be fun (and educational) - and you can earn those precious silver points while swimming in shark-free waters.  Check out the flyer to your left (and click on it to enlarge it for viewing or printing).

MINNESOTA TOURNAMENT TABLES UPDATE

It's an encouraging sign that even with the Gopher Regional table count off -2.3% this year compared to last year, the overall number of tournament tables (so far) in 2025 is still just a hair above 2024.  Through May 28th, we've seen 1,215 tables in play at Minnesota held tournaments, and that's 5.5 tables more than we had last year at this time.  In a world of slowly smaller events across the bridge world, even a few tables increase is great news.

The Winter Sectional in January and Rochester Med City Spring Sectional were both up pretty big; the Leap Into Spring Sectional was off this year; and both the St Cloud NLM Sectional and Gopher Regional were very close to right on target from 2024's numbers.  Your next opportunity to add a playing table or two to this total comes at the St Cloud Sectional June 12-14.  Their flyer can be found by clicking here.

PLAYER TOURNAMENT MASTERPOINT RACE
The Gopher Regional was the 4th of 10 major tournaments in Minnesota this year.  Now that the masterpoints have all been issued, where do our local players stand in terms of tournament masterpoints for the year so far?  To your left would be the top 20 Minnesota tournament player masterpoint leaders.  With Terry Beckman's [Brooklyn Park] winning the Gopher Trophy this year, it's a horse race - as he is beating Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie] by just 1.37 masterpoints out of 142.00.  Lots of tournaments to go yet this year!  It is still anyone's title, especially with a second regional coming up in September down in Rochester.  Plan on getting a few tournament masterpoints at the next big open event which is coming up June 12-14 in St Cloud (flyer here).

HAND ANALYSES OF A FEW PLAYED AT THE GOPHER
There were some very interesting hands that were thrown at Regional players last week.  Most Minnesotans know that Mike Cassel [Roseville] provides terrific analysis and commentary of hands (and weekly, when the Minneapolis Grand Slam Club is in session).  He's been kind enough to share with us a few of the hands from last week - all of them good results for declarer or the opponent (but then, that is bridge) - and they are shown below.

The first hand has to do with figuring out the right defense to set a slam contract; trick 1 isn't much of a question mark, but trick 2 will make the difference!  (Click on the image to see the whole deal and answer.)  The second hand deals with a bidding sequence that most of us wouldn't come up with (which is why Mike wanted us to learn from it).  It's a way to find out that you don't just have a slam, you have all 13 tricks.  Bidding it in NT with a stiff A in one suit isn't easy - but someone did find it.  Another great bidding sequence is shown on the third hand - and we're grateful for Mike to have sent these instructional and informative analyses.

A TESTAMENT TO THE GOPHER PR COMMITTEE
Five open regionals took place last week across North America; all of these are regularly scheduled tournaments (annually, or in the case of Richmond VA, a bi-annual event).  The current playing environment doesn't exactly allow for the expectation of a huge increase in tables each year at anyone's tournament. . .and quite possibly a small decrease may be the best one can do.

Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis] and her Gopher PR Committee headed by Warren Nelson [Cloquet] really have to be commended for the work they did in promoting the Gopher this year.  Of the five open regionals that ran last week, the Gopher had easily the smallest dropoff in tables of all five.  (Denver CO's tournament ends today, ao their table counts used here were from Tuesday of last week through Saturday.)

The NABC next July will be nice to have, no doubt!  But we'll miss the success of the Gopher until 2027.  And our calendar is already marked for it.

May 26 2025
ROCHESTER PLAYERS REPRESENT
Friday at the Gopher Regional was "Carol Mahoney Day", and a dozen Rochester area players came up Friday to both get some gold points and at the same time honor their friend at the bridge table of many years.  Here's a photo of the group that was taken inbetween the sessions on Friday at the Crowne Aire Plaza Hotel.  (All from Rochester, unless noted otherwise:  Front row, L to R, John Miller, Pari Pew, Xintao He, Sue Greenberg [Byron], Kent Dalzell.  Row 2 is Bob Roediger and Jan Morris.  Row 3 is Ann Van Ryn, Sheri French [Pine Island], and Connie Dalzell.  In the back is Layne Vinje and Matt Belau.)

May 25 2025
WOODBURY FUNDRAISER + SPRING PARTY DEETS
The Woodbury Bridge Club Spring/Summer Party is coming up next Monday, June 2, starting at 10am.  They're cancelling their regular Monday game that day, and instead will be a party and fundraiser to benefit local food shelves.  You can sign up for lunch (in advance!) at the club, along with a $15 entry fee to the party - otherwise it's a $5 fee going towards prizes to be awarded as well as the food shelf fundraiser.

The Woodbury club is celebrating three new Life Masters, who all earned their title at the Gopher Tournament this week (that's Gail Baev [Woodbury], Greg Dorr [St Paul], and Earl Conner [Woodbury]) - so if there wasn't already the expectation of cake(s) at this party, bring 'em on.  They'll have a "Social Bridge" Tournament on Monday in place of their regular game, where players get partnered up with different players through several rounds of Chicago-style scoring.  All those details can be found on the flyer to your left.  Anything that involves bridge, social interaction, and fundraising for local charities in need is a must-attend in our book.

2025 GOPHER REGIONAL CHAMPION
This year was Terry Beckman's [Brooklyn Park] turn getting the crown.  He earned 99.21 masterpoints during the week at the Gopher and just narrowly missing having joined the "Century Club" for the Gopher.  This is Terry's first win of the Gopher tournament, and he joins a long list of terrific players over the past 20 years - that list is to your left.

GOPHER REGIONAL WRAPS UP TODAY
That is it for this year's Gopher Tournament - quite the week of cards in Bloomington.  The table counts for this tournament were stronger than last year's earlier in the week (when the weather outside was not so great), and fewer tables than last year as the long holiday weekend approached with some sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Still, 735 tables over the six days is a terrific turnout; the tournament is expected to make a small profit.  And more than 4,868 gold points were delivered to mainly Minnesota players (but still being gracious to our out-of-state guests).  Your masterpoint list (and leaderboard) for the week can be found by clicking here.

Also of note: team tables made up nearly one-half (48.4%) of all the tables at the tournament this year, which is sharply higher than any other year (more on this later).  There was a KO event even as recently as last year, the two-day "Soloway style" KO; but the decision to remove that from the schedule and just play bracketed teams appears to have been a very smart move.

For the 32 Open regionals the ACBL has held so far this year, the overall average table count is off -3.6% from last year; so this year's Gopher (at -2.3% year-over-year) actually did better than average!

MINNESOTA'S NEWEST LIFE MASTERS
Two additional local players are celebrating big time at the Gopher this week, as Gail Baev [Woodbury] and Gregory Dorr [St Paul, left] both made their Life Master status yesterday at the tournament.  Congratulations to Gail and Gregory!

CROSSWORD PUZZLE CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED
It's Kristine Verdin [St Paul], who went five-for-five on Kurt Schaeffer's [Lakeville] daily crosswords of the day.  Well done, Kristine!  Smart thinking required to solve these crosswords is not unexpected from Kristine; if you've seen her at a bridge game (even here at the Gopher), you know she is "always in the overalls".

INTERMEDIATE CONVENTION CLASS STARTS NEXT MONTH
Bridge classes across Minnesota are most popular (and thus most frequently scheduled) during the fall and spring months.  But of course learning more about this terrific game knows no season!  Now, thanks to Teri Blu [Bloomington], you can educate yourself during the next couple of months as she runs a class on Intermediate Bridge Conventions.

Teri's class starts on Tuesday, June 3rd, and runs Tuesday afternoons from 1pm to 3pm through July 29th.  It's at the Edina Senior Center (Classroom 4), and there is a $100 fee to attend.  You can find more information (and how to sign up) by clicking here.  Remember, even if you aren't interested in a lot of new bridge conventions, it's good to know them (so you know what your oppoenents are doing!) - and you might even change your mind and pick up a few new ones for your convention card.

WHERE THE GOPHER MIGHT FIT IN
This week's Gopher Regional is looking to better last year's table count of 752 tables in Bloomington.  Where does that fit in among the open regionals held so far in 2025?

There have been more than two dozen open regionals to date, and besides the mammoth Gatlinburg TN tournament, a lot of the bigger table counts belong to "destination" regionals (those are vacation spots where you can also play some bridge).

Even if there was no increase in tables from last year, the Gopher should be in the top half of regionals for attendance.  But no matter the final table count, having fun at the event will matter most.  And THAT is pretty much a lock no matter how many tables there are.

May 23 2025
FRIDAY AT THE GOPHER REGIONAL
Day 5 at the Gopher saw 125 tables in play, just 6 tables shy of the Friday 2024 tables.  With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, table counts in general have trailed off quite a bit for Friday and Saturday over the years, and this year isn't likely to change much in that department (especially with the great weather we have now!).

One more day before all the bidding boxes get put away - so you can still get your bridge fix at the Regional level in tomorrow morning at 10am and again at 2:30pm.

KURT'S KROSSWORD - DAY 5
It's the last of Kurt Schaeffer's [Lakeville] crossword of the day - be sure to pick it up today by the Partnership Desk.  Complete it - and turn it in.  You can check out today's puzzle (and the answer to Thursday's) by clicking here.  Only puzzles that are picked up at the Gopher in person and turned in there are eligible for recognition and prizes.  Kurt told us today that there are presently two (2) people who have perfect records on these crosswords through the week - he may have a winner for us tomorrow morning!

FRIDAY'S NAMED GAME: CAROL MAHONEY
Carol Mahoney, at 91 years old, was a regular fixture at the bridge table in Rochester right up until her passing this past year.  Carol’s accomplishments in bridge were many, as she celebrated becoming an Emerald Life Master in 2023.  At a party to celebrate her crossing this milestone, Carol was adorned with praise and stories (both at and away from the bridge table) by her many partners and opponents.

Carol was more than an accomplished bridge player of course, with her pleasant personality and friendly demeanor, she was well liked and always welcome at the table (and every other social situation).

When Carol moved to Rochester from Indiana and joined the local bridge club many years ago, her first milestone in Minnesota bridge was becoming a Gold Life Master.  A party was held on her behalf (as is customary at the Rochester club) and Carol was very pleased and a bit surprised – saying “my old bridge club in Indiana would never have a party for me like this!”  We were glad to have been able to have a few parties for Carol and wish we could have had one or two more.

THURSDAY AT THE GOPHER TOURNAMENT

Thursday at the Gopher Regional saw another 130.5 tables in play, which was a bit short of the 150 we had on day 4 last year. . .but overall, we are right on pace with last year's tournament and 526.5 tables.  Once again, there were four brackets of team players which was a terrific turnout for the bracketed teams.  Thursday was also the Larry Oakey Pairs, which saw John Koch [St Cloud] and Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] get their names on the trophy for 2025.  The Gold Rush Larry Oakey Trophy (pictured left) was earned by Michael Kotten [Eagan] and Pat Kotten [Eagan] - well done!  On top of all that, the teams have really soared in this tournament; the lower chart on your left is the percentage of team tables compared to the total tables in the tournament - prior to the COVID era, teams made up around 30-33% of the tables.  This year, teams are making up 47% of the total tables.  IMP play is BACK baby.

Full results from the Gopher Regional can be found by clicking here.

KURT'S KROSSWORD
Here's Kurt Schaeffer's [Lakeville] crossword of the day.  Remember to pick it up each day by the Partnership Desk.  Complete it - turn it in - and wait for the recognition (and maybe the Grand Prize!).  You can check out today's puzzle (and the answer to Wednesday's) by clicking here.  Only puzzles that are picked up at the Gopher in person and turned in there are eligible for recognition and prizes.

THURSDAY'S NAMED GAME: LARRY OAKEY
Few Minnesotans have been as celebrated in the bridge community as Larry Oakey has.  Peggy Kaplan described Larry as “the greatest tournament bridge player to ever grace our state”, and with good reason.

Although the bridge community was shocked to lose Larry so suddenly in 2017, everyone gathered shortly afterwards at the Twin City Bridge Center to remember Larry and to celebrate his life.  Despite grief and shock at losing Larry so suddenly, those emotions were overwhelmed by love and laughter as he was remembered.  With standing room only, many shared TGLO (“The Great Larry Oakey”) stories - bridge experiences of triumph or disaster, Larry's devotion to girls' softball coaching and other sports, his vast knowledge and love of film - and his omnipresent sense of humor.

Bridge alone was not why he was so revered.  Larry was an incredible teacher, director of games and a volunteer of the highest order.  In addition to the countless hours devoted to our game, Larry coached girls’ softball, worked at the MPLS Art Institute across from his apartment, and gave enormous time to the theatres where he enjoyed his second love: movies.

Few had his giant intellect, his huge facility with numbers (he literally was able to beat early computers with calculations), and all of it tempered with great gentleness and kindness.  The heart of Minnesota’s Bridge world, Larry will be treasured and remembered always.

UNIT 103 BOARD MEETS AT THE GOPHER
Unit 103 held their annual Gopher Regional Tournament meeting this evening, where everything got underway following an update on the tournament (and upcoming Nationals) from Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis], our Tournament Chair.

Patti reported that tables will be right in line with last year - possibly a few off from last year's totals.  She indicated that's not unexpected, and presently this tournament is still expected to make a small profit.  She's very happy with the turnout, and very pleased with everyone who has helped to make it the success that it is.

Patti also provided an update on the Nationals in 2026, where efforts will be made to raise money - and she urged everyone, from the District to Units to local clubs to individuals to please help by raising some cash to help put on the Nationals.  The money she's interested in raising will go to fund our local volunteers and helpers, as well as some transportation issues getting people in and out of the downtown Minneapolis area.  For example, Patti wants to provide free parking downtown for all volunteers - and is going to have a shuttle service running from the Bridge Center of St Paul to the National playing site for those that want to park offsite.

More on all this will be coming down the road, but with Patti in charge we're pretty sure things will go really well.

Minutes from the 103 Board meeting will be posted on this site just as soon as they are approved.

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO
Another day at the Gopher Regional and another new Life Master crossed the line.  That's Earl Conner [Woodbury] on your left, who just became a LM this afternoon coming in 3rd in his Bracketed Teams event for 3.96 gold points - and become a LM.

Earl played with Dan McIntyre [St Paul] this afternoon, and he joins Florian Lauer [St Paul] who just became a Life Master yesterday.  Well done and congratulations to Earl!  We will see who is next to make a milestone at this tournament, as there is another three days of gold points about to be dished out in Bloomington.

TWO GOPHER PLAYERS GONE PLATINUM
Just since last year's Gopher Regional Tournament, two very special players achieved a nice milestone.  Here's a shout-out to Barry Purrington [Eagan] and Peg Waller [Edina] who both became Platinum Life Masters over this past year.  10,000+ masterpoints is quite a reason to celebrate!

TABLES UPDATE
A bit of a pullback on Wednesday, with 128.5 tables in play at the Gopher (that's about 8 tables shy of last year's day 3) - but for the week so far, tables have come in at 396 for the tournament.  That's an increase of +5.3% compared to the first half of 2024's Gopher.  There were four brackets of teams again today, as teams are becoming more and more popular as time goes by.  Three more days to go.

KURT'S WEDNESDAY KROSSWORD
Did you know there's a special prize for the person who completes the most (and most accurate) crossword puzzles at the Gopher this year?  Kurt Schaeffer [Lakeville] has been good enough to compose five crosswords (one daily through Friday) which you can pick up each day by the Partnership Desk.  Complete it - turn it in - and wait for the recognition (and maybe the Grand Prize!).  You can check out today's puzzle (and the answer to Tuesday's) by clicking here.  Keep in mind that only puzzles that are picked up at the Gopher in person, filled out, and turned in in person are eligible for recognition and prizes.

WEDNESDAY'S NAMED GAME: ROGER MELAAS
Roger Melaas of St Cloud has been an integral part of the St Cloud DBC for years.  Before COVID, Roger was running free bridge lessons and “chat bridge” at Liberty Bank in St Cloud.  Noting one or more advancing players about a play or bid well made during the prior evening’s sanctioned game, players could then ask questions about hands from the night before.  A short lesson followed, and then bridge, as Roger would monitor the tables to advise players on hands that were particularly difficult or interesting.

Roger is known to have a kind, never critical style, mentoring advancing players even today.  He has a unique ability to give bridge advice with graciousness, while instilling confidence.  When players believe their game is tanking, he always tells them not to give up. He offers his expertise after a game to discuss a played hand at any time.
Over his fifty years of playing at the Club, he has and continues to send little notes of affirmation about your play, or your movement up the ACBL ranks.  For Roger, all players matter.  While newer players receive his encouragement, he also ensures that veteran players are supported.  Finally, Roger has been intimately involved with the St Cloud club’s operations.  He served as president of the Club for over 25 years, and he and Club Manager Kory Solarz were in contact almost daily.  Together, they established, and modeled personally, a club culture that is welcoming, ethical and fun!  The biggest donation Roger has made, and makes in every game he plays, is his desire to ensure that the enjoyment of playing duplicate bridge is passed on to others now, and will last beyond his lifetime.

May 20 2025
DAY 2 AT THE GOPHER
The second day of play at the Gopher this week found another 138 tables of bridge in play; that's up +10.4% from last year's day 2, and for the two days so far you're looking at an increase of 27.5 tables (or +11.5x%).  Once again, four brackets of teams were in play, which is really terrific.  Full results of the tournament can be found here, the daily bulletin for the tournament can be found by clicking here, and the masterpoint winners (and there are many!) can be found by clicking here.

NEW LIFE MASTER AT THE GOPHER
Here's Florian Lauer [St Paul], Minnesota's newest Life Master!

It happened for Florian on Monday, playing on a team with Marcia Figus [Shoreview]; they came in 3rd in their Bracketed Teams bracket to pick up enough gold points to go over the line.  (Participating in the successful team effort was Nancy Brunzel [Chisago City] and Jerry Bartlett [Lindstrom].  Florian has needed 0.09 gold points to become a Life Master for what seems like 40 or 50 years (but really hasn't been quite that long), so it's terrific that he has made it and even better having made it at the Gopher Tournament.  Congratulations to Florian!

299er TROPHY WINNERS
Picking up the trophy in the 299er game on Tuesday was Nancy Anderson [Plymouth] and Mark Chodosh [Minnetonka].  They had a sparkling 60.50% game today to pick up the hardware.  Well done!

KURT'S GOPHER KROSSWORD FOR TUESDAY
Did you know there's a special prize for the person who completes the most (and most accurate) crossword puzzles at the Gopher this year?  Kurt Schaeffer [Lakeville] has been good enough to compose five crosswords (one daily through Friday) which you can pick up each day by the Partnership Desk.  Complete it - turn it in - and wait for the recognition (and maybe the Grand Prize!).  You can check out today's puzzle (and the answer to Monday's) by clicking here.  HOWEVER!  Only puzzles that are picked up at the Gopher in person and turned in at the tournament are eligible for recognition and prizes.

TUESDAY'S NAMED GAME: CONNIE NELSON
Connie has proven herself time and again to be not just helpful to the Minnesota bridge community, but responsible for the growth and incredible turnout for central Minnesota’s club and tournaments.  Having served on the Unit 103 Board, Chaired the Gopher Promotion Committee in 2023 and 2024, and done so much for bridge in the St Cloud area, it’s an honor to be able to honor her with some named games today.  Here is a look at her bridge journey from her partner at and away from the table:

Connie grew up playing cards, starting with cribbage and quickly adding whist and pinochle to her set of games.  After marriage, she added “500” to her set of games and proved to be good at that as well!  It was much later that she added bridge to her list.
Her husband, Jim, had played some in college and after a few months of watching a group of play at lunch every noon, he joined in every time they needed a fourth.  When they discovered that their friends, Roger and Sue, played bridge, they decided it was time to have Connie join the bridge world.  Soon the four of them had a standing game every Friday night unless something else came up for either couple and something else came up fewer and fewer times.  This continued for almost 10 years until 2013 when they decided to try the duplicate club in St Cloud.  They were hooked.  In particular, Connie was hooked.  And not just playing bridge.  She was soon helping to organize the annual sectional that St Cloud puts on each year and after a few years she was in charge.  When St Cloud needed a representative on the 103 board, she volunteered and soon she was also on the Board for the Gopher Regional (and chair for publicity).

Always encouraging other players to play, to go to tournaments, and to get better, she added not one, but two I/N tournaments in St Cloud in order to introduce local players to tournaments and give them opportunities to earn silver points.  She and her husband offer free weekly mini-lessons once a week to help others improve their game.  She still even finds time to play a few times a week!  And she has been a district representative to the NAPs and GNTs 4 times in the last 10 years.  Through the years, she has not only been a fierce competitor at the table but also a tenacious advocate of the game.

CLUB CALENDARS FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE
With everything going on at the Gopher Regional this week, don't forget about next month's club games.  June is the start of the North American Pairs competition at your local club, where for the next three months during the summer you can qualify to play in the D14 NAP competition. . .and ultimately play at next spring's NABC in St Louis MO.  This year, the D14 NAP Finals are hopefully going to be back in person - and will be held F2F in September.

Next month also includes the St Cloud Granite City Sectional, which has been moved due to too many tables of players at their old location (a problem we would all enjoy having!).  The three-day silver-point "Upper Midwest Coachella" is taking place at the Sauk Rapids Government Center - if you would like directions on how to get there, click here.  Here's a look at club calendars around the state:  (Click on any calendar to enlarge it and open in a new window.)

GOPHER TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF
And. . .they are off.  The Gopher kicked off today with 129.5 tables, and increase of +12.6% over last year's day 1.  And organizers should be pretty happy with the 30 bracketed teams which created four different brackets.

Dave Gustafson [Stillwater] celebrated his birthday at the Gopher today - and there were the "usual suspects" helping out at the information tables and partnerships desks.  It was a terrific crowd - and so much so, that parking was a bit of an issue.  There's been an update to overflow parking at the Gopher, with bridge players able to park in ANY open space in the hotel parking ramp as long as it is not marked as "reserved for Aire Plaza resident".  On to day 2!

E-CLUB BBO PLAY STILL SUFFERING
Two more online BBO games here in Minnesota have shut down this week.  The Minneapolis Grand Slam Club Tuesday evening online game is on hiatus, as is the Thursday evening Rochester DBC online game.  Neither of these online games has been supported well in the past few months, with the MGSC unable to even give away free Gopher entries to entice players to get online over the past month leading up to the Regional.

This is not Minnesota's problem alone, as has been documented here in the past.  E-Clubs (or "Electronic Clubs", which used to be known as "Virtual Clubs", as the ACBL initially called them) have been suffering across ACBL-land for some time.  The ACBL has tried to group what's left of the online players on BBO together, with the "ACBL Clubhouse" games - which is an effort to take all of the tiny games and make a big one or two.  The ACBL then gives some of the money back to the players' local clubs.  It does make for a bigger game, but at the expense of your local E-Club.

You still have a few online options out there for the E-Club crowd; and of course there are always the bots (BOOOO!).  With the nicer weather here for a few months, online play isn't likely to pick up up a lot. . .but we will see what transpires later in the fall.

"IT'S A SET UP, I TELLS YA"
Without volunteers to set up tables, bidding boxes, and more, you'd be having to do it yourself next time you come play bridge.  For a tournament as big as the Gopher, the set up requires a number of people to help out.  Your tournament chair, Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis], wanted to give a special thanks to the following people who helped put everything together today at the playing site. . .so that you could just show up next week and have fun.  Here is the list of people that Patti wanted to thank:
    Bill Voedisch [Marine]
    Dave Neiman [Minneapolis]
    Andy Caranicas [St Paul]
    Eli Caranicas [St Paul]
    Kurt Schaeffer [Lakeville]
    Keith Thompson [Bloomington]
    Warren Nelson [Cloquet]
    Jenny Peterson [Golden Valley]
    Mark Stuhlman [Clearfield UT]
    Richard Clayton [Clearfield UT]

58 CONSECUTIVE YEARS AT THE GOPHER TABLE
It might be one of the longest running regular partnerships in Minnesota, and possibly the longest pair at the Gopher in Minnesota's Duplicate bridge history.  Here's a partnership that started in 1967, with next week being the 58th consecutive Gopher Regional for these two.

Bill Voedisch [Marine] and Denny Cerkvenik [Minnetonka] formed a partnership in 1967.  Here's the scoop from Bill himself:
[Denny and I] started our bridge journey as follows.  In early 1967 we were both young programmers at Cargill and started playing lunch-time bridge.  That fall we became members of Cargill's 2nd Mpls Industrial League team, and I remember winning my first fractional masterpoint sitting across from Denny.  He already had a few masterpoints playing with Arnie Ullevig and I thought to myself ... I'll never catch him!

We are also among very few players still alive who played in the first Swiss Team ever in Minnesota in the winter of '68-'69 at the Calhoun Beach hotel.  The only person in the room who knew how to score was Larry Oakey ... who else ... and he had all he could do to keep us focused and organized.

I believe Ron DeHarportte was there and I'm wondering if others still with us were also there.  Maybe let me know.

Denny and I were also founding members of "The Polish Army," a name assigned to us by Larry based on your last names.  We also had Roger Heimke.  We got Polish Army shirts and when we next showed up at a Swiss, Larry was selling the entries and asked ... as only he could ... "I suppose you think men in uniform play free."

    The memories.

Thank you, thank you Denny for over 58 years of bridge together.

        -- Bill Voedisch
Be sure to look for them next week at the table - at this rate maybe they should have their "regular" table, like any frequent restaurant might have for their best customers?

SPECIAL GOPHER BONUS FOR 0-15 MASTERPOINT PLAYERS
Keith Thompson [Bloomington] and Nick Fahrer [Sydney AU] from the Bridge Shop Australia are providing some bonus prizes for Gopher players next week with fewer than 15 masterpoints.  It's a great incentive (and reward!) for newer players testing the tournament waters in Bloomington.

Newer players will have a chance to collect bridge-themed items such as pens, earrings, shoelaces, keychain holders, tee shirts, socks, playing cards, and bidding wheels.  Eligible players should stop by the Information Desk next week to check it out - and get a special welcome.

WHERE WE STAND WITH THE ACBL GUEST MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM
One way to battle the post-COVID drop of ACBL players was an ACBL program started in 2021 that allows for "Guest Memberships" at no cost to players.  It's simply a way to introduce new players to the ACBL (and games that require ACBL membership) for free for four months.  After that, players either let their membership lapse or are required to convert to the ACBL's annual 12-month membership.  Just yesterday, the ACBL posted their statistics on how the Conversion Process is going, and Minnesota's Units are doing better than average.

In Minnesota, clubs in Unit 103 run more Mentor and NLM programs, so it's not a surprise that 103 has seen more Guest Memberships (209 players) than Unit 178 (131 players).  But 178's figure is still well above the ACBL-wide average of 52 guest memberships since the program's inception.  Of these four-month free-membership players, Unit 103 has converted 37.8% of them into full-time ACBL members; 178 has converted 23.6% of theirs.  (The ACBL's average conversion rate is 46.2%.)

This program has been successful in introducing new players (and classroom learners of the game) to some longevity in the duplicate bridge world.  The Gopher Regional next week will have a spot for signing up non-ACBL memberships to this guest membership program, but it works just as well at your local club.  (And it's how they get hooked!)

You can invite your family and friends to a free four-month ACBL membership by signing in here.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR BRIDGE ETHICS?
The Norwegian Bridge Federation made a video; it's less than five minutes in length.  And it highlights a number of ethical and procedural errors during a single hand of bridge.  This is a video that has been around for awhile, but it's recommended viewing for players of all stripes*.  When you have a few minutes, view the video and figure out how many of these mistakes at this bridge table you can count.  Click on the image to your left (or click here) to view the video and then try to spot the errors.  There are plenty.

AFTER you've seen the video - you can click here for the answer key.

*(It's a video that's not just for beginners and intermediates.  Even players with more than 18,000 masterpoints occasionally laugh at their opponent's play - which happened earlier this month in a Roseville game.  Everyone can learn something from watching.)

DIAMOND LIFE MASTER WATCH

Someone's getting awfully close to a major milestone.  A Diamond Life Master (that's 5,000 masterpoints) is in the works - and the player in question might cross the finish line this month.

As of today, there's still a bit more than 80 masterpoints to be acquired before the big party takes place; however this player earned more than 62 masterpoints at last year's Gopher.  So with the big regional taking place next week, a lot of this ground could be covered in a very short period of time.  PLUS this individual is a regular masterpoint earner at our local clubs each week.  Chances are good that you know who this player is - and can't wait for their party to celebrate crossing the line soon.  Updates coming.

MINNESOTA CLUB TABLES - AT THE BREAK

The Minnesota Gopher Regional each year provides a natural break for many bridge clubs in Minnesota; and it offers an opportunity to step back and take a look at the first 20 weeks of the year's tables around here.

For almost all of Minnesota's bridge clubs, table counts the first 20 weeks of 2025 are off a bit from the same period just one year ago.  The top chart on your left shows the change in average number of tables per week for each of the major bridge clubs from 2024.  For the entirety of Minnesota, club tables are off -2.1% from the same 20 pre-Gopher weeks in 2024; the St Cloud DBC stands out as the huge anomaly here with an eye-popping increase in tables of +29.6% per week.

The bottom chart on your left shows the number of each club's pre-Gopher tables-per-week relative to the last pre-COVID year of 2019.  (Where club tables in 2019=1.00, clubs that have more tables per week than 2019 are above that N=1.00 line; clubs that have fewer are below the line.)  Two things stand out on this chart.  First, when looking at pre-COVID tables to the current 2025 tables, four of Minnesota's bridge clubs are above the 1.00 line - meaning they have more tables now than they did in 2019.

Woodbury, at the top of the chart, was the benefit of two things: they've added a weekly game since 2019, which has helped increase their overall tables.  In addition, when the Bridge Center of St Paul moved 12 miles to the west, Woodbury snapped up some of the East Metro's players.  The Edina Senior Center game also has more tables than before COVID - but that's because the behemoth which was the Twin City Bridge Center shut down, and Tony Ames swooped up some of those tables.  Northfield doubled their games per month, so they're also above the line.  Most other clubs show slightly fewer tables than 2019, and for Minnesota as a whole, our tables are at 97.9% from six years ago.

The second thing that stands out on this lower chart is that almost every club has improved their table counts since the first 20 weeks of 2022's totals; so since we've been back, there's been some growth across the board.  Now we'll see what happens after this year's Gopher.

IN A SENSE, ONE SUPPOSES, SIZE DOES MATTER

Looking at the average tables per game for all Midwest states, Minnesota is doing pretty well.  The top chart on your left is the weekly tables per game for each of our six Midwest states through the start of 2025.  Below that is the total number of face-to-face games run in each state so far this year.

Generally speaking, North Dakota has some very small games (2-1/2 tables); no doubt they would prefer larger table counts, but you must think they're glad to be able to play duplicate bridge at all.  South Dakota has so few games during the week (two or three) that a really well-attended game can spike their weekly average (thus the wild swings on the chart for SD).  Nebraska has a few very large games, as do Iowa and Minnesota.  Minnesota runs far more games than anyone else, including mentor and limited masterpoints games (which aren't big games and therefore artifically limits our overall tables per game number).  But as you can see from the chart, we're in a good place - and all those limited masterpoint games Minnesota runs should really payoff down the road.

DETROIT LAKES IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Tuesdays and Thursdays in Minnesota's Lake Country are back in the bridge business for the summer.  Over at St Luke's Episcopal Church in Detroit Lakes they're once again dishing out the masterpoints and doubling the opponents twice a week.  Their first game of the summer season is today thanks to Mary Ann Bond [Fargo], who runs the program in DL, and they'll be playing through mid-September.  If you're driving through or up at the lake for a week, this is your chance to get in some cards!

MINNESOTA'S SECOND REGIONAL SCHEDULE IS SET
This month it is "all things Gopher Regional", and with good reason, but Minnesota is fortunate to be able to have a second regional again this year.  The Med City Regional down in Rochester this September will once again feature Bracketed Teams, Open Pairs, and 499er Pairs, as well as a special day for bridge newbies.

They're trying something new in Rochester this September - Supervised Play (also known as Chat Bridge) on day 1 at the Med City Regional.  Players who have less than 20 masterpoints can play duplicate bridge in a tournament atmosphere while mentors roam the room to answer questions, help with the bidding or play, and more.  Theoretically, the plan is to try and bring in a few tables of players to the tournament atmosphere that might not normally come.  Will it fly?  Just one way to find out.

The flyer for the tournament is posted on your left.  (You'll hear a lot more about it between now and September.)

PERFECT WEATHER FOR INDOOR BRIDGE
Why, it's as if Gopher Tournament Chair Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis] has an "in" with a local meteorologist.  (Or retired one.)

The early weather forecast for the Gopher Regional next week is perfect weather for indoor bridge.  Not so much tennis, or boating, or golf, but bridge, yes, definitely bridge.  A lot can happen between now and next week, but at the moment there's a definite trend towards the springlike - and not the upper 80s we've been enjoying this week.  It's expected to be mostly cloudy most of the week, with showers or rain possible (or likely) each day except Thursday.  Daytime highs right around 60F until the end of the week, when things warm up once again.

Note that if you were hoping to goose your turnout at a bridge tournament, where the only drops that fall are those of declarer's tears, this is the forecast you might hope for.  It certainly can't hurt attendance!  Stay tuned.

WHAT MIGHT BE THE LAST OF THE TEA LEAVES
When it comes to the upcoming Gopher Regional, if there are any tea leaves left to be read, the D13 Spring Regional that just wrapped up in Madison might provide them.  The good news for Gopher attendance is that Madison's total tables were up from their regional last year.  Each year in the post-COVID era, the D13 Spring Regional in Wisconsin has seen an uptick in tables.  Not by all that much, but always in the preferred direction (up!).

Total tables in Madison this past week came in at 283, or up +4.2% from last year.  It shows that Midwest bridge players are still coming to the big tournaments, and for Minnesota there's no bigger tournament than the Gopher Regional next week.  (Nearly a dozen Gopher players made the trip to Madison to help with that table count - hopefully they'll return the favor!)

You can check out how all the tournaments this year are doing on the ACBL tables page of this website.

AND NOW. . .WE WAIT
Just how well organized is the Gopher machine that Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis] has built and operates?  Well enough that she's canceled the last committee zoom meeting.

The last of the Gopher Planning Committee meetings was scheduled for this evening, but that has been canceled as everything is going according to plan.  So "according to plan" that there just isn't much else to do except show up next week and have fun at the bridge table.

It's a testament to Patti's organizational skills and the people with whom she surrounds herself with, and the work they do is not lost on the rest of us.  So while tonight's meeting has been canceled for the committee, the great news for everyone is that things finally appear to be on auto-pilot with less than a week to go.  Making plans to play next week is a great way to show your appreciation for their hard work!

184 LOCAL PLAYERS GET SOME GOLD
Minnesota just wrapped up a week of Stardust Games, where the ACBL allows participating clubs to provide 25% gold points to those who earn masterpoints at the club.  So how did everyone do?  Just above is your "Top 30" list from last week, with Grant Duffrin [Roseville] coming in 1st place - earning 0.99 gold points, which is terrific considering he could do so without having to do any travel to a tournament.  Of course this is just the big warmup for the Gopher Regional which gets going next week.  There were 184 Minnesota players in all that scored some gold dust this week - which is a terrific result for our local clubs.

GOPHER REGIONAL IN T-MINUS ONE WEEK
Set up for the big tournament is on Sunday afternoon at 2pm at the Crowne Plaza Aire Hotel in Bloomington - you do not need to sign up to come help, as everyone is welcome to help set up tables, bidding boxes, and the rest of the hard goods from the trailer.  Your time commitment is generally less than an hour - and then it's Gopher Gold for six days of fun.  Get ready to rock!

YOUR KING OF MINNESOTA CLUBS FOR MAY
Players love extra masterpoint games, primarily because you can get lots of extra masterpoints.  And not just the winners in each direction (or overall winners) - but many more players within the game get masterpoints, too.

The Rochester DBC runs as many extra masterpoint games as possible, and that means top awards of 4.00+ or even 5.00+ in some of their Monday games.  Greg Caucutt [Rochester] doesn't like to miss a game, and he earned more than thirty black masterpoints in April at their club - nothing online, no tournament play, etc., just during their local club games - and thus has earned the title of Minnesota's "King of Clubs" for this month.

Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park] was right there at 27.84 black club points in April, good for second place this time around (and frankly, first place any other month).  The top black club masterpoint winners are listed to your left.

A SPECIAL SHOUTOUT TO THE PLANNING COMMITTEE
Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis] asked us to give a special shoutout to the 2025 Gopher Planning Committee on her behalf.

Tournaments in general - and especially those the size of the Gopher - do not magically come together with the wave of a pass card.  They start with terrific organization at the very top - that would be Patti - and the fine people with whom she surrounds herself.

Thanks to every member of the Planning Committee for their exceptional volunteer service, and for the fun we're about to have in less than two weeks.

GOPHERS IN BADGER TERRITORY
This week the Madison WI Regional (in Middleton) is taking place, and there are players from the Gopher State that are taking on the home team.  Nearly a dozen Minnesota players are there, with most earning some masterpoints, and a few doing quite well!

Tony Ames [Minnetonka] partnered up with George Bleskachek [Eau Claire] and their team won the 22-table Swiss teams midweek.  The same event saw Fay DeBellis [North Oaks], Kimberly Hayward [Bayport], Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] and Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] coming in 7th out of the 22 tables.

There's more!  Full results of the Madison WI Regional can be found by clicking here.

STARDUST WEEK - AT THE HALF
We're halfway through this week's Stardust Games across Minnesota - would you believe 139 players in our state have already gotten some "gold dust" through Wednesday afternoon's games?  Here's a look at your Top 25 leaders through Wednesday afternoon.  More gold dust opportunities are still out there through Sunday.

MINNESOTA'S MONTHLY MAY MASTERPOINT MILESTONES
Twenty Minnesota players crossed a milestone last month, to make their next rank achievement in their bridge journey.  Those twenty players are listed on the image to your left - be sure to give them a pat on the back when you see them at the club!

WELCOME TO THE PARTY
New ACBL members in Unit 103 this month include:
    Sarah Armstrong [Mendota Heights]
    Rochelle Christensen [Falcon Heights]
    Elizabeth Kiernat [St Paul]
    Mary Jo Leighton [St Cloud]
    Don Stryker [St Paul]
Be sure to welcome (and encourage) these new players to the game - we're glad to have them along for the ride.

A BIT OF GOLD DUST AT YOUR LOCAL CLUB
Just a couple of weeks from now, there will be lots of gold points being wheelbarrowed out of the Crowne Plaza Aire Hotel at the Gopher.  But you can get a jump start on the gold points this month with earning some gold dust at your local club this week.

Participating clubs in Minnesota this week will provide 25% gold (and 75% black) points - without any special travel on your part.  You can play in the friendly environment of your own local club!  Check with your local club manager to see what games are gold dust games this week, as the Stardust Week started yesterday and runs through Sunday.

TWO MORE FOR THE MGSC BEFORE THE SUMMER BREAK
The Minneapolis Grand Slam Club is holding two more Tuesday evening online games (6:30p on BBO, look for VACB101691) tonight and one week from tonight.  Then it is their "summer break" where they will be taking a break from the online schedule until ~Labor Day.  Attendance in the E-clubs has cratered in the past two years, and the ACBL's new "Clubhouse" games which direct some entry fees towards your local club still has you playing in a game that's not in your local club.  So it's not just the MGSC that's been suffering, it's ACBL-wide.

But there's a game tonight!  The good people that run the MGSC are offering free Gopher entries to both the winning pair (and a random pair) that play in the game this evening, so there's even more incentive to sign up and get into some trouble from the comfort of your own home.

BAD BEAT JACKPOT PAYS OUT ON SUNDAY
  Ooof.
"We really didn't have any bad boards today" - Dave Collins [Fridley] to partner Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] just before scores got posted.  (He was right.)
The "Bad Beat" Jackpot paid out on Sunday to Dave and Terry, who had a really sharp 72.21% game at the 103/178 Awards Game at the Bridge Center of St Paul.  With 21 tables in play in the Open section, that should be good enough for 1st place and the trophy.  But not Sunday.

In a race as close as winning any Kentucky Derby by a nose, 20.00 matchpoints was the top available score on each of the 26 boards in this game, and just one-half a matchpoint separated Dave and Terry from Barry Purrington [Eagan] and Paul Gutterman [Eagan] who were your big winners on Sunday - with a 72.31% game.  You might be familiar with your local casino's "bad beat" jackpot at the Texas Hold 'Em table, when aces full (or better) gets beat by a better hand.  When we say the bad beat jackpot paid out, unfortunately the jackpot here is $0.00.  Maybe we should start one going?  (Or maybe one pair should buy the other one lunch - but which pair buys?)

GOPHER TOURNAMENT TWO WEEKS OUT
You are just two weeks out from the Gopher Regional!  Tournament Chair Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis] has put together the 1st Daily Bulletin for the big tournament.  You can "read all about it" by clicking on the image to your left or by clicking here.

This Bulletin will be emailed to everyone who played in the Gopher one year ago, so chances are you'll also get it in your e-mailbox.  It makes for great reading and is packed with info on the upcoming event.

AWARDS PRESENTATION PARTY + BRIDGE GAME

Quite the crowd at the Bridge Center of St Paul today for the Minnesota Awards Presentation Get-Together.  This is the first year Units 103 and 178 combined their awards program, and in addition to a terrific lunch and presentation, 25 tables of bridge followed.  A special thanks to Sue Greenberg [Byron] for putting it together this year and emceeing the event along with Sue Sanger [Bloomington].  The spread before the game was put together by Sandy Nelson [Minneapolis] and Amy Dutton [Mendota Heights] (which was so yummy), and of course a shout-out to the Bridge Center of St Paul who was kind enough to host it and handle all the giddy award winners.

Results of this inter-unit bridgefest can be found by clicking here (the Open game) and for Minnesota's 749ers, their results can be found by clicking here.

UNIT UNIFICATION TALKS PROGRESSING
Your representatives from Units 103 and 178 are continuing their progress on working to try and figure out whether or not unifying the two bridge units in Minnesota can happen - and how that might take place.  Another online meeting was held this week Thursday evening, and a new policy document is just about wrapped up for what could be a single unit for all of Minnesota.  (An agreement early on to keep sub-committee topics just within the sub-committee prevented any news on what was happening within the sub-committee, however that agreement is no longer in effect as unit 178 has been openly discussing these topics during their open board meetings.)  Unit 103's board will get an update at the Gopher Regional tournament meeting, and after that the sub-committee will start working on bylaws.  Some healthy back-and-forth has taken place (that's what negotating is, of course) and so far "it's all good."  Remember, your best source of information on these unification efforts (or any unit business) is to check with nearest your friendly board member.

MINNESOTA TABLES REPORT: FIRST TRIMESTER 2025
The first four months of 2025 are in the books; here's where we are:
Tournament tables (Open and I/N combined) are up +5.0% from 2024 (480 tables vs 457 last year through April 30)
Online BBO VACB tables are down -14.3% from 2024 (198 vs 231 last year, no surprise as e-Club participation has fallen off the cliff everywhere; the new ACBL Clubhouse, which directs funds back to local clubs, hasn't helped with this)
Face-to-face club tables are up +0.9% from 2024 (2,872/2,845; the ACBL as a whole has witnessed a jump of +2.6% for these first 16 weeks of the year [335,856 vs 327,278])
All Minnesota tables (in person, tournaments, and online) are up +0.5% from 2024 (3,550/3,533)
It could be worse!  (And it could be better.)  For now - Minnesota is holding its own.

DERBY DAY

Who won the Kentucky Derby?  Probably not relevant to bridge players enjoying Mint Juleps (both regular and alcohol-free) at the table Thursday.  Who won the Hat Contest might be more important!  Here's Rochester's 749ers looking sharp (and hopefully playing sharp) on Derby Day.

MAY IS GRASS ROOTS FUND MONTH
There is a lot happening this month in Minnesota for bridge players, and a big part of the action is May having been designated as "Grass Roots FUNd" month.

Every face-to-face bridge game at your local club this month can be a Grass Roots FUNd game, which pays extra masterpoints - AND supports D14's Grass Roots program which supports our Grand National Teams and North American Pairs events.  Check with your local club manager about running these special games (or your club's calendar of games for then they are being held).  More on the ACBL's designation of this month can be found by clicking here.

There's a "Stardust" week next week thanks to the ACBL, and the big Awards Game at the Bridge Center of St Paul on Sunday.  Of course one cannot forget the Gopher Regional in a few weeks!  More on all of these big May games as they get closer.
