FOUR DAYS TO GO IN PHILADELPHIA
There are more than three dozen Minnesota players over at the Summer NABC this week; with four days to go, we're hoping they all get more masterpoints (and have a great time).

All of the results for the NABC can be found by clicking here.

AN UPDATE ON THE NAP

We're two-thirds of the way through the club qualifying part of the North American Pairs this season; there will be lots of games in August providing a chance to qualify (if you haven't already) or to provide big big masterpoints that are half-red half-black whether you've qualified or not.

The number of Minnesota players that have qualified to go on in this competition is 501!  That's 10 more than last year through the first two months (or +2.0%), and a big chunk of our qualified players have come from the Flight "C" group, which is terrific.  Over half of the NAP qualifiers in Minnesota are from Flight "C" (259 of 501).  That's a good thing.

One area of concern for some of our local players may be the Flight "A" (0-6,000) and SuperFlight (Open) categories of the NAP, where there are 40 players this year who have qualified so far vs 64 players last year.  That would indicate some small games in the D14 Finals, but we'll see.  There's still the month of August yet to qualify.

Are you one of the 501 players already qualified?  You can find out for sure by clicking on the list of players to your left.  And whether you are or are not - more red and black points are available in August.  Check with your local club manager to see when those games are scheduled - and get those games on your bridge calendar.

LOCALS STILL PHLYING HIGH IN PHILLY
A few more of your local Minnesota players are missing from the club this week, as they've headed east to play in the NABC underway in Philadelphia PA.  Michael Cassel [Roseville] is one of the latest additions to the masterpoint winner roster at the NABC, as Michael picked up 15.38 platinum points playing in the Senior Swiss Teams.  His team finished 21st out of 104 that made it through the qualifying round to play for the big money.  Also scoring big in the teams today was Charles Carroll [St Paul] who played in the Swiss Teams Tuesday - and his team came in 2nd out of 67 teams.  That's another 19.95 gold points for Charles.

All of the results for this NABC can be found by clicking here, and you can check out the 3,039 players on the masterpoint winner's list by clicking here.
Thinking ahead to next July, when this tournament will be held right here in the City of Lakes, we'll be looking to best the table counts current taking place in Pennsylvania.  Through 7 of 12 days now at the NABC, their table count of (unofficially) 5,381 tables is just 6 tables off of the 2024 Toronto Summer NABC's first 7 days (where they had 5,387).  Of course Warren Nelson [Cloquet] and his PR team will be doing everything to get players to the table next July, and looking at how the Gopher has performed the past few years, we're in good hands.

YOUR UNITS SUPPORTING THE GAME
Minnesota's two bridge Units do more than put on bridge tournamnents - although that might be the most high-visibility impact to the average bridge player.  Part of their responsibility is to support the game of bridge and those that play it at all levels.  College bridge clubs, non-sanctioned games across the state, funding for innovative ideas to promote the game, there are a lot of things that your bridge unit is doing a bit more behind the scenes - but still efforting to keep our game going.

It's not enough to just support the players, but units exist to support their clubs as well.  (One likes to have a place to play.)  Each of Minnesota's units is reimbursing clubs this summer in an effort to help clubs help us promote the game.

Unit 178 is reimbursing their clubs the $4/table for special games; those are any games above the standard masterpoint rating which pay out overall awards (and big, big masterpoints).  Typically, that cost would be passed on to the player.  This has been going on for a couple of months now - and if you're a fan of this program let your 178 board member know.

Unit 103 is reimbursing their clubs the $21/table for Flight C stand-alone NAP games this summer.  Any 103 club that holds an NAP game for Flight C players only can (in effect) run that game for free.  It's an effort to promote getting more Flight C players within the NAP program.

Getting players more involved in ACBL programs like the North American Pairs and getting players more and more masterpoint awards are just a couple of the things going on right now thanks to your local bridge unit.  Got other ideas?  Contact your unit board member and talk to them - as they are here to support you and always willing to listen to new ideas.

DAY 6 AT THE NABC
Today started off with a couple of Minnesotans in the ACBL's Daily Bulletin.  Andy Caranicas [St Paul] and Richard Lawson [Plymouth] had their photo taken for winning the 0-6000 LM Pairs.  The full bulletin can be found by clicking here.

The Spingold KOs get going today in Philadelphia PA; there are two Minnesota players among the 88 teams that have signed up for this event.  Kyra Helmbold [Minneapolis] is on one team, and Cecelia Ehrlichman [Ann Arbor MI] is on another.  Talk about fearless!

All of the results for this NABC can be found by clicking here.

THE SUMMER OF LOVE?
Minnesota's active bridge clubs across the state are all showing an increase in tables over last summer - some by quite a bit.  In the nine weeks since the Gopher Regional tournament, club tables are up 190 compared to the same period in 2024.  Woodbury has seen the largest nominal increase in tables since last summer, with 61 more tables than they had in 2024.  The only two Minnesota clubs that did not see an increase in tables are both inactive (not holding any games now, and not scheduled to hold any games in the future).

But it's all good news!  These comparative numbers for each bridge club in our state are for club tables only, and do not include any tournament action.  Hopefully this trend will keep going the rest of the summer and into the fall.  (Of course, you can do your part to help make it happen.)

MINNESOTANS NOT WAITING FOR HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Sunday at the Philadelphia PA NABC saw Minnesota players having a pretty good day - even if our home field advantage in these events won't be for another summer (when this tournament is held here in Minneapolis).

The #1 pair (of 36) heading into the two-session finals of the LM-6000 Life Master Pairs competition today was Andrew Caranicas [St Paul] and Richard Lawson [Plymouth].  Their first session found them with a 57.84% game this morning, a 3rd place finish in the session but still good enough to keep them in the pole position for this afternoon.  Their afternoon session was a 53.86% game, good for 4th in their direction, but enough to keep them on top.  Andy and Richard came in 1st overall in this event - picking up 75.00 masterpoints.  Can't wait to see what they do next year with the home field advantage!

Another Minnesota pair in this event, Charles Carroll [St Paul] and Paul Gutterman [Eagan], moved up from 10th place to 7th place heading into the afternoon.  Their afternoon game of 54.69% helped bump them up another three spots to 4th place overall in the 0-6000 LM Pairs for 34.62 masterpoints.  Also - very very nice.

The #1 pair (of 36) heading into the two-session finals of the 0-3000 Pairs today was Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis].  Their 52.83% game this morning dropped them to 2nd place going into the last session of the day; but it still was good enough to win their direction in their section.  This afternoon Jackson and Sarah scored a 54.90% game; but they finished 3rd overall in the 0-3000 Pairs and picked up 28.13 masterpoints for their efforts.  (What a great ride this must have been!)  Pointing out one board from their afternoon game in which they were the only pair of 18 to bid 7NT:

The #34 pair (of 78) heading into the two-session finals of the Von Zedtwitz LM Pairs was Vern Swing [Minneapolis] and Keith Connolly [St Paul].  Firing up just at the right time, their 60.93% game this morning vaulted them all the way to 5th place at today's break.  Whatever they had at lunch, well, we're not ordering that again, as their afternoon game felled them to 59th place overall (to be fair, this is the toughest possible crowd with which to have a sub-par session).  Heads held high, though, for a wild ride in this NABC event, and of course their reward of 16.76 platinum points for all their effort.

All of the results for the NABC can be found by clicking here.

NEW LOCATION AND YET SAME GREAT BIDS
It took less than 24 hours at the new location for the St Cloud DBC to produce its first Grand Slam.

Dan Finn [St Cloud] playing with regular partner Roger Melaas [St Cloud] did some investigative bidding to count 13 tricks (that's assuming clubs break, but sometimes you've just got to go for it).  Everyone else settled with a more comfortable 6 contract, completely understandable with a singleton ♠A, but these two who have played together for years didn't waste any time in setting the 1st ever Grand Slam at the Midtown Square location.

Here's hoping it's the first of many.

HOW YOU CAN HELP THINGS GO RIGHT
Here's more on Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl's [Minneapolis] monster 76.30% qualifying game in the 0-3,000 MP Life Masters event Friday at the NABC.  The NABC doesn't keep public records of previous NABC game percentages, so there's no way to find out if this is the highest-ever scoring game in this (or any) NABC event, but it's so impressive.  A previous post detailed some of the doubled contracts that helped get some top boards - Jackson was kind enough to write up several other boards of interest that came up during the round, and they are posted just below.

Click on any of these four boards to enlarge them and open them in a new window - and you'll get the details from Jackson himself.  In addition to being a bit - well - aggressive - (after all, bridge is for bidders!) - Jackson shows how you can help to make things go right (by being in unusual contracts that others might not be in, taking advantage of opponent errors, etc.).  It's good stuff.

HOW IT'S GOING OUT EAST
UPDATE:  The last Minnesotan in the GNT Finals fell this afternoon to a tough team from Palo Alto CA (D24).  Congratulations to Ross Anderson [Woodbury] and teammates for getting this far, and hopefully much fun was had.

Minnesota is being represented quite well at the NABC in Philadelphia PA today, with some of the following results:
Charles Carroll [St Paul] and Paul Gutterman [Eagan] advanced in the LM-6000 Life Master Pairs today going into the final session this afternoon in 3rd place overall.  They had a 46.54% game in the final session to finish the event 10th overall and are qualified for tomorrow's finals.

Andrew Caranicas [St Paul] and Richard Lawson [Plymouth] were in the same event, also doing well, having qualified in 28th place and heading into the final session in 7th place overall (of 52).  Then they had a 63.69% game in the afternoon, which pushed them to the #1 seed going into tomorrow's two-session finals.

Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] held on to the top spot in the 0-3000 Life Master Pairs going into the final session today with a 57.88% game this morning.  The afternoon session saw the Wahls with a 53.69% game, but this is all enough to maintain their pole position going into the 0-3000 LM Finals tomorrow.  They are the #1 seed of 36 pairs for the final two sessions on Sunday - they know everyone's coming for them!  (An interesting note about their carryover into tomorrow's final two sessions, they got the maximum carryover possible of 4 boards.)  Updates tomorrow.
PREVIOUSLY:  Now that the NABC is in full swing, here's a look at total tables through 1 Friday - and the comparative tables for the previous post-pandemic Summer NABCs.

Overcall across ACBL-land, tables have mostly peaked since the return from the pandemic, and the very early table numbers from Philly appear to support that trend somewhat.  It's tough to compare NABCs to one another, since they're held in different locations each year, among other things.  But the good news for Minnesota (at least so far) is that there's not a massive drop off in play or in players; and next summer we can expect to play host to a terrific sized crowd.  (Don't forget Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis] would love to have you as a volunteer to help out next summer.  Contact her any time to get more details.)

How is it going back East for those Minnesota players who have made the trek to have some fun?  A look at your masterpoint leaders from our local clubs is to your right; this list is only going to get lengthier (and more robust!) as the NABC moves through this first weekend of play.

And the lone Minnesota player among D14's five GNT teams playing at the NABC is Ross Anderson [Woodbury], whose Flight "C" team is playing in the semi-finals of Flight "C" today.  Keep it going, Ross!

FRIDAY IN PHILLY
UPDATE:  YGBFKM.  76.30%?  At an NABC?  Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], last seen exiting the GNT Flight B yesterday in a loss to the D6 Team, scored an incredible 76.30% game in the 0-3,000 LM Pairs this evening.  Jackson and Sarah came in 10th place in the morning session of the 0-3000 LM Pairs, with a 58.91% game.  But things really took off in the late session, and the combined two scores made them the #1 seeded pair heading into the competition tomorrow.  This 76.30% game came about with five clear top boards (100% of the matchpoints), and each one of these was a doubled contract.  One on offense (2X for +870), and four on defense (6NTX for -300, 1NTX for -200, 3♣X for -800, and 3X for -800).  Just an outstanding day for these two.  Much much more on this game when your blogger has time overnight.

There's more of course - Elliot Heyman [Shorewood] and his partner from New Hampshire came in 1st in the 35-pair field of 299ers this morning with a 64.87% game.  Then this afternoon, the same duo took 2nd overall in the 299ers with a 62.64% game.  One gets the impression Elliot might be ready to play in the big game for some gold points!  (Elliot and his partner were companions of Jackson and Sarah in college here in Minnesota, and it's great to see them playing together again.)  Charlie Carroll [St Paul] and Paul Gutterman [Eagan] came in 14th overall in the 0-6000 LM Pairs today and qualified to go on to tomorrow's event.  They're joined in tomorrow's session with Randy Okubo [St Paul], Andrew Caranicas [St Paul], and Richard Lawson [Plymouth].

The Open LM Pairs event qualified 156 pairs to tomorrow.  Coming in at #146 was Keith Connolly [St Paul] and Vern Swing [Minneapolis].  The #99 pair today in this group was Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] and Robert Schachter [Eden Prairie].

PREVIOUSLY:  In addition to the two D14 teams remaining in the Grand National Teams competition, there is a new NABC+ event starting today; that would be the Life Master Pairs.  It's one day of qualifying, another of semi-final action, and then a finals on the third day, and there are actually three different LM Pairs events.  An Open event, a 0-6000 masterpoint limit, and a 0-3000 masterpoint limit.  This is another of those events that will be held in Minneapolis next year at our NABC.  Too early to make your partnerships for 2026?

MEET MINNESOTA'S NEWEST DIAMOND LIFE MASTER
Here is Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park], Minnesota's newest Diamond Life Master!  Congratulations to Joe and well done, sir!  Joe managed to cross the 5,000 masterpoint mark in the Thursday morning game this week, partnering with John Schlundt [Eden Prairie].  We caught up with Joe on his way to getting his DLM, which he thought would come some time this year ("I had a pretty good last year," he told us).  There had been the possibility that Joe would get his DLM at the Gopher, where last year he earned more than 82 masterpoints (and needed 57 as of mid-May this year), but it happened mid-summer at the local club instead.

Joe has been on a pretty good run of late; the chart to your left shows every pairs game Joe has played in the past three years (that's 569 pairs games, including club and tournament games).  His average score over the three years is 57.09%, which is incredibly impressive.  And of these 5,000 masterpoints, almost 1,000 of them have come just in the last three years.  Joe's earned 810.4 masterpoints in 569 pairs games, 51.22 masterpoints in club team games, and 80.14 masterpoints in tournament team games over the past 36 months, which is a monthly average of 26.16 MPs.  WOW.

When you see Joe, be sure to let him know he's "done good" -- and if anyone deserved a bridge game and party to celebrate their achievement, we're sure you would agree that it's this guy.

DAY 2 AT THE NABC
EVENING UPDATE:  Another Minnesotan, Chris Westermeyer [Falcon Heights], has made the journey east to get some action at the NABC.  He played in the Gold Rush today, with Jason Grove [Glastonbury CT].  They came in 4th in the morning session and 3rd overall on the day to score 3.99 gold points in the first full day of NABC play.  Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] playing with a team from Poland, came in 1st in the #1 bracketed teams group today (and frankly, it wasn't even close) to earn 25.83 MPs.  Randy Okubo [St Paul] played in the Open Pairs, Daniel McIntyre [St Paul] played on a team coming in 3rd in bracket #4 (it was extremely close), and more Minnesota players will arrive tomorrow.

The five D14 GNT teams playing in their second day of matches at the NABC saw three of the five teams get upended today.  (Results are just below.)  Here's a shoutout to the D14 GNT Teams in Flight B, A, and the Superflight, who clearly played well to get this far.  The good news is that there are two teams moving on to the quarterfinals (in the Flight B and Flight C category).  Also - a reminder that this teams event will be held right here in Minneapolis next summer at the NABC here.  So we're looking forward to seeing quite a few of these players once again next year.

PREVIOUSLY:  There are already 17 Minnesota bridge players who have earned some masterpoints at the Summer NABC, all of them having a successful day 1 in Philadelphia PA.  As those matches get posted, we'll have updates below and hope they all have success again today.  Lots of other events get going as this is the first day of everything else - updates to follow.

THEY'RE MEASURING THE DRAPES

It's true, there's quite a bit of excitement happening over in Pennsylvania, but don't forget about the bridge here at home.  Minnesota's next Diamond Life Master is only about a half-masterpoint away from crossing this milestone.  Vegas bookmakers have it as odds-on favorite to happen today, but we will see when the cards come out.  Soooooo close!

YOU BETTER KNOW YOUR BRIDGE ETHICS

Most Minnesota bridge players practice good bridge ethics, which is terribly important to the game - and to those who play it.  But remember that the ACBL makes it your responsibility to know many of the things that are and are not allowed.  ("Ignorance of the law is not a valid defense," as they say.)  This is critical now that almost a dozen Minnesota players have been caught cheating at the table.  Some of these players have returned to the table, having served their sentence, but that is not the end of the story.

A perfect example came with the D14 GNT Finals a few months ago.  One of the teams playing had an ineligible player on the team (this was a player "Not In Good Standing" with the ACBL, having previously been suspended and then put on probation, and now was back; players "Not In Good Standing" are prohibited from playing in a District GNT Final, thus making them "ineligible").  The error was brought to the DIC early in the morning on day 1 of play; the decision was made to allow this player to keep playing and finish out the day, with the rest of the team allowed to compete the next day with a substitute player (the team having earned some gold points in the end).

The ACBL's Code of Disciplinary Regulations spells out what could easily have taken place here, and it's not pretty for anyone:
302(B)(6) defines "Deliberately or negligently partnering or playing on a team with a person who is ineligible for that event" as a Second Degree Conduct Violation, with the ACBL's 302(B)(8) recommended discipline for the rest of the team as 1 to 6 months suspension and/or 1-6 months of probation.
So even if the other players on the team had no idea this was illegal, it wouldn't have mattered.  And getting suspended by the ACBL or put on probation (or both) for playing with an ineligible player is a tough way to find out what the rules are.

This is not to say you should avoid playing with players that have come back from disciplinary actions imposed by the ACBL; most will have learned their lesson and should be welcomed back to the game.  But it is incumbent upon YOU to know what is and is not allowed - so that you are not unknowingly putting yourself at risk of violating the ACBL's Disciplinary Regulations.  You can read more about what it means to play with a player on the Players Who Are Not In Good Standing list by clicking here, and the Code of Disciplinary Regulations by clicking here.

HOW WE'RE DOING (COMPARATIVELY)

A previous post detailed how Minnesota's bridge clubs are doing compared to one year ago; if you're curious how we are doing compared to all of D14's bridge clubs, here are those numbers.

On your left, the change in table counts for each D14 club (and by each state); on your right, the percentage change in year-over-year tables for the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year.  Every state appears to have clubs that are "winners" and "losers" when it comes to their tables in play this year so far - but for some reason Nebraska seems to stand out.

MINNESOTA'S NABC NAME-A-GAME
The summer NABC in Philadelphia PA gets going this week; and next summer, it's going to be right here in Minneapolis.  Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis], who is on the 2026 Summer NABC Public Relations Committee, has opened up next year's tournament to named games (also events or even whole days).  Here is how it works:
    1.  Decide whether you'd like to name an event - or a day.  Single-session events are $100; two-session events $200, and four-session events $400.  Want to name an entire day for someone (or something) special?  That would be a $1,000 donation.

    2.  Contact Patti to confirm which event(s) or day(s) you'd like to sponsor.  She'll make sure your event (or day) is available to be named and get the correct name.

    3.  Send your check to Barry Purrington [Eagan], who is the 2026 Summer NABC Treasurer.
It's that simple.  Monies that are collected for naming events and days of the 2026 Summer NABC will go towards supporting local tournament volunteers right here in Minnesota.  So it's for a great cause, as well - but don't wait TOO long.  There are only so many events, and there are a lot of great people among Minnesota's bridge community who deserve to be honored (and quite a few who will honor them).

ST CLOUD CLUB TURNS A CORNER
Well - really, several corners - as all the St Cloud games effective immediately will be held at their new location at the Midtown Square in downtown St Cloud.

Here's a look at this week's last crowd from the Labor Home, where the last -800 was scored for the St Cloud DBC on Thursday.  Directions (to the new playing area AND parking) can be found by clicking here.  They were hoping to get everything going a bit before the official August 1st date, and it sounds like they were successful.  No word yet on if there is a prize for the first -800 at their new location - but anything is possible.

CLUB CALENDARS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST
Here is a look at club calendars from around the state for August - there is a LOT going on once again in Minnesota bridge clubs.  (That's a very good thing.)

Starting tomorrow (Monday), all of the St Cloud games will be at their new location in downtown St Cloud, including during the upcoming month of August.  You can find directions (to the new digs and parking) by clicking here.  There's a regional in Eau Claire the first week of August along with the Omaha Regional the followoing week.  But locally, the Bridge Center of St Paul will have their annual NLM event in August PLUS everyone is having North American Pairs qualifiers. . .so there's a lot to consider when making out your calendar.  Too many choices?  Never.

KEEP UP-TO-DATE WITH YOUR UNIT'S ADMINISTRATION
Don't forget to check out the Minnesota Documents page on this website, which includes all kinds of information about Units 103 and 178.  This includes their meeting minutes, where you can investigate what your Unit Boards are discussing and how they are planning to help keep bridge moving forward in our state.  Just as soon as the latest Board minutes for each Unit are approved and published, they'll be available on this site.  (If your Unit's minutes are missing, it's most likely because they have not submitted them for publication.  Check with your local Unit board member.)

A BIG SHIFT IN NAP QUALIFICATION
We're halfway through the club-qualifying period of the North American Pairs this summer, as clubs can hold NAP games through August 31st.  There have been some changes to the NAP this year, to bring its flights (and their masterpoint restrictions) into line with the GNT, which made the changes last year.  This has produced some shifts in NAP qualification around here, and not necessarily what one might call minor changes, either.

Before we get to the new flights, the number of Minnesota players that have qualified so far for the NAP total 477 through July 15th.  That number is up +34 compared to last year at this time, so that's great news!  Overall, the number of Minnesota players this year is up +7.7%.  You won't find too many quibbling with that increase.

What's changed, however, is the masterpoint restriction for these flights - and that could be fodder for some grumbling by the usual suspects.  Flight "C" has seen a jump of +43 more Minnesota qualifiers than last year at this time; that's a terrific figure that includes a few who have between 500 and 750 but are not yet Life Masters.  Those are "carryover" players to the Flight "C" from last year, since this year (for the first time) the "C" Flight is 0-750 rather than 0-500.

The change in Flight "B" from 0-2500 MPs to 0-3500 MPs has allowed several Minnesota players in that 2500-3500 range (and we have quite a few) to remain in the "B" Flight.  The net change for Flight "B" this year is up +14 players so far.  But it is the new "A" Flight and the Championship Flight that are seeing the big shift in NAP qualification.  There are 23 fewer players between this year and last for NAP qualifiers with more than 3500 MPs (38 so far, vs 61 players in 2024 through July 15).  This means a smaller Flight "A" (and Championship Flight).

Remember, any player who qualifies in the NAP can always "play up" - so if an advancing player with 800 masterpoints qualifies for every flight in a club's Open game, they could theoretically play in the Championship Flight if they so chose to do so.  But at the moment, it looks like a smaller group at the top - and quite a few more players at the bottom - which may be the intended consequence of the ACBL's new rules for this year.

UNIT 178 MASTERPOINT LEADERS "AT THE HALF"
The ACBL issues their masterpoint leaders to each Unit as of the July 6th masterpoint update, so that those in the hunt for both recognition and bragging rights can easily see where they're at in the competition.  Unit 178's masterpoint leaders are to your right, from left to right: the Ace of Clubs division (those playing in local bridge clubs but no tournaments), the Mini-McKenney division (clubs + tournament play), and the Virtual Ace of Clubs (online points).  There are still six months to go, of course, and lots of tournament action - so get involved and make these races competitive!  (Click on any race to open the results in a new window - as always, we've redacted the player address information.)

INSTANT MATCHPOINT GAME RESULTS
Wednesday's Instant Matchpoint Game was held locally in the Roseville and Rochester games, with some familiar names doing quite well across D14.  Here's a look at the results from the ACBL-wide extravaganza (or click here), and the D14 leaders of the event are as follows:
1 Steve Gaynor [Arden Hills] Jean Boettcher [Arden Hills]65.93%10.00 MPs
2 Mark Lasoff [Minneapolis] David Neiman [Minneapolis]59.63%  7.50 MPs
3 Rod Morlock [Stewartville] Al Larson [Rochester]58.70%  5.63 MPs
4 Joanne Long [Rochester] Marie Nelson [Rochester]57.78%  4.22 MPs
5 Ron Seeger [Rochester] Terri Seeger [Rochester]57.04%  3.15 MPs
Remember, nothing is set in stone until the ACBL says it is - and we may still see some late entries from D14.  But congratulations are in order for these local players who did pretty well at the table Wednesday.

TWO MONTHS OUT FROM MINNESOTA'S OTHER BIG REGIONAL
It's really just eight weeks away!  The Rochester Med City Regional for 2025 is coming up on September 15th, for a week of red and gold points. . .and you'll be hearing a LOT more about it between now and then.  But although it seems like it's months and months away, the number of weeks out is down to eight.

You might want to get your partnerships in order - already - before the big rush to hook up with players gets going.  If you need a partner, Bar Wijdicks [Rochester] will take care of the Open crowd this year, with Connie Dalzell [Rochester] handling the Non-Life Masters in search of a table partner.  All the details can be found by checking out the flyer for this tournament, which can be found by clicking here.

Oh - and Thursday is "Dress Up" Day for those inclined to walk the red carpet in style.  You never know who might show up.

July 16 2025
ITALY WOMEN'S UNDER 26 QUARTERFINALS
The USA1 team played the Netherlands today; during the qualifying sessions, it was the Netherlands that spanked the USA1 team 24-2.  Through the first 14 boards of this competition, the USA1 team lead 36-31.  No big swings, but lots of 7-8-9 IMP range boards.  Click here to check out the results and boards if you're so inclined (it's fun to see how they get to the contracts they do).

The second 14 boards saw 5 major swing boards, with 3 of those going to the USA1 team.  Leading 81-55 at halftime of the day, with 28 boards to go, 36 IMPs is really just three big swing boards - so although it's nice to be in the lead here, you know it's still very close.

But the Netherlands team came roaring back to take the last two rounds 90-38, and put the USA1 team's plans on advancing to an end.  (How did those twins from the Netherlands come up with the spade lead on board 16?)

Congratulations to Cecelia Ehrlichman [Ann Arbor MI] and Kyra Helmbold [Los Gatos CA] for having played in this tournament (and doing so well).  This isn't the last time that the WBF has heard from these two, we're sure.

MINNESOTA PLAYER TOURNAMENT MASTERPOINT LIST
The Maple Grove Aquatennial Sectional was the 6th of 10 major tournaments in Minnesota this year.  Now that the masterpoints have all been issued, where do our local players stand in terms of tournament masterpoints for the year so far?  Immediately below would be the top 50 Minnesota tournament player masterpoint leaders.  No change at the top of the list (the #1 and #2 players remain in their respective spots), but overall 509 Minnesota players have earned some tournament masterpoints through last week's Aquatennial Sectional.  Plus there's several more tournaments to go before a champ is crowned, so it's not over yet!

The next open tournament for Minnesota players will be in September, as we have our second regional of the year in Rochester.  The Rochester Med City Regional will be your next chance to add to your Minnesota Tournament Masterpoints - and maybe move up a few spots on this list.

Today was Day 3 of 3 for qualifying for the USA1 Under-26 team comprised of six bridge players including Minnesota's former frequent players Cecelia Ehrlichman [Ann Arbor MI] and Kyra Helmbold [Los Gatos CA].  After an outstanding day yesterday, their team went 2-and-3 in their matches and ended up in 7th place.  That is good enough to move on to the quarterfinals for tomorrow, where they will play the Netherlands.  We wish them good luck!  Here is a look at today's matches, with links to each round:

TOURNAMENT TABLES UPDATE

With the Maple Grove Aquatennial Sectional well in the books, here is a look at our tournament tables in Minnesota and how they are doing so far this year.  There are still several major tournaments (along with a few more minor ones), but through mid-July our 1,508.5 tournament tables is 94.5% of last year's tournament tables through the same period.  Next up are a couple of NLM events, a one-day NLM tournament in Rochester next month, followed by a three-day NLM tournament at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  Then - Minnesota's second big regional takes place in Rochester in September.

ITALY WBF YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 2

Keeping an eye on Cecelia Ehrlichman [Ann Arbor MI] and Kyra Helmbold [Los Gatos CA], who are in Salsomaggiore, Italy among the USA1 Women's U26 team, and the competition is tough!  They are playing 15 other teams over three days to qualify for the Women's U26 World Youth Teams Championship.

Today was Day 2 of 3 for qualifying, where they played another five teams.  After having a rough first round against the Netherlands, they really bounced back winning all four remaining matches today and are now in 2nd place overall.  Here is a look at today's matches, with links to each round and a swing board in each:

THAT IS A WRAP FROM MAPLE GROVE

In the 15 years before the introduction of COVID to the bridge world, the Aquatennial Sectional averaged 52.2 tables per day; so the 45.7 tables per day of bridge this week were down slightly, continuing the trend for tournaments (everywhere) this year.  Among all of Minnesota's bridge tournaments, table count comparisons for this tournament might be taken at a bit of an arm's length.  First, this is the first tournament in the West Metro in two years; if it were held regularly in Maple Grove, it's possible players would become more comfortable with the location and schedule.  (Last year it was held more than 20 miles east at Roseville.  So while it's 30 minutes closer for St Cloud players this year, it's 45 minutes farther for Woodbury players, etc. - different crowds for the same event.)  Second, compared to two years ago (2025 Maple Grove tournament to 2023 Maple Grove tournament), well, two years is a long time in the bridge world for tables to taper off some, especially when the tournament had a year off from the Maple Grove location.

All of that said - here are the charts.  While it is true that tables this week for the Aquatennial were down from last year (and also from two years ago), there is a silver lining in this silver masterpoint tournament that can't be denied.  Non-Life Masters helped make the Aquatennial a big success, and organizers should be very, very happy.

Not only was the 499er share of all tables in play this week higher than last year (and rivaling 2023's share), but the number of NLM tables was up in almost every session.  That's not easy to make happen.  With NLMs being the future of our game, the fact that NLM tables were up compared to the other two post-pandemic Aquatennials (and not down) is terrific.  Maybe the NLMs in the West Metro should have their own NLM Sectional?

Finally - this tournament was supported (and even chaired) for many years by Tom Botten [Prior Lake] who we lost just last month - and somehow it seems kind of fitting to have held the Aquatennial within a week of Tom's Celebration of Life.  Here is a reminder that this Thursday, July 17th at 12:30pm is a half-hour visitation, followed by Tom's Celebration of Life at 1pm at the Lakewood Memorial Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55408.  If you're inclined to stop by, there's also a reception immediately following at the Lakewood Garden Mausoleum.

ITALY WBF UPDATE
Day 1 at the World Bridge Federation Youth Championships took place overnight; Minnesota's Carlton College graduate Cecelia Ehrlichman [Ann Arbor MI] and Kyra Helmbold [Los Angeles] are among the USA1 Women's U26 team.  After the first day of competition, the USA1 team is in 6th place out of 16; you can click on the images to your left to be taken the World Bridge Federation site and see more on their matches and hands.

2025 AQUATENNIAL CHAMPION CROWNED
Congratulations to Carole Miner [Rochester] on winning this week's Aquatennial Sectional Tournament!  Carole played all three days, picking up 28.26 points, and has earned the title of Aquatennial Champion for the next 12 months (at least).  She also has the distinction of breaking a 12-year streak of men winning this tournament, so there is that.  Following Carole in the masterpoint leaderboard is Gary Knippenberg [Golden Valley], with 23.69 masterpoints and then Barry Purrington [Eagan] with 23.39 MPs.  The Top 20 Open players (and Top 10 499ers) are listed to your left.

MONTHLY UPDATE FROM THE MOTHERSHIP
The ACBL held their monthly meeting for Unit Presidents this week; there are a couple of updates which will impact our Minnesota clubs - and our Minnesota NABC next summer.  Here's a quick recap:
The college teams at this month's NABC in Philadelphia PA are expected to number very close to 25 teams; that's a number with which the ACBL is very happy.  The ACBL is expecting about 140 college players in Philadelphia, and possibly more by the time Minneapolis holds its NABC next summer.  As per the NABC summer schedule, we'll have some collegiate events here, and it sounds as though they may be well attended.

The promotional price for joining from a guest membership in the ACBL to full membership is currently $29, but the ACBL has alerted (!) that this price tag is expected to go up in October.  Whether this means all ACBL fees and charges will be going up is yet to be seen, but bridge may once again be getting more expensive.  An update on pricing and fees is expected later this summer.  In the meantime, the ACBL has made it easier for guest membership sign-ups; you used to have to include all kinds of information (the same as a regular membership) but now they require only first and last name along with an email.

THURSDAY AT THE AQUATENNIAL
Today is day 3 in Maple Grove at the Aquatennial Sectional; it's your last chance to get some tournament-rated silver points for awhile as the next sectional tournament play is scheduled in October down in Mankato.  But another nice crowd today could mix up the masterpoint leaderboard as the race for the tournament champion has tightened quite a bit.  Carole Miner [Rochester] is tops on the masterpoint "Top 20" list through 2 days with 19.86 silver points; she's followed by Thorwald Hansen [Edina], with Nancy Hartzler [St Paul] fending off all comers so far in the NLM group.  Results later today as they are posted.

U26 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS GET UNDERWAY
Seven time zones away from here, the U26 ("Under 26") World Teams Championships will be getting underway later tonight our time.  A lot of formalities, welcoming, etc., with an Opening Ceremony later tonight.  And then the bridge (which is the main attraction!) gets going starting tomorrow.

Our interest in this event that is a third of the world away?  One former Minnesota player (and now doctorate student at the University of Michigan) Cecelia Ehrlichman [Ann Arbor MI] is on the US team of the Women's U26ers.  We will have updates on how the US Team is doing as the play gets going, and hope for the best of luck to Cecelia and her teammates.

July 10 2025
DAY 1 AT THE AQUATENNIAL
Carole Miner [Rochester] and Gary Knippenberg [Golden Valley] sit atop the leaderboard at the Aquatennial Sectional after day 1, earning 12.49 masterpoints.  Your "Top 30" masterpoint leaders are to your right, with the 499ers also listed.  The NLM crowd is led by Jill Wroblewski [Minneapolis] and Nancy Hartzler [St Paul].  These masterpoint totals are different than what the ACBL has posted - that's because with these pair/team games, you can get two masterpoint awards, and the ACBL doesn't bother to separate them out.  But in the end - you only get the bigger masterpoint award of the pair or team game that you earned, so the ones posted on this blog are the correct ones.  (If history is any guide, the ACBL will catch up to reality next week.)

Two more days of action in Maple Grove!

YOUR KING OF MINNESOTA CLUBS FOR JULY
Here is a shout-out to Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park], who earned more masterpoints in Minnesota clubs last month than any other player.  And this month it wasn't even that close!  Joe played fourteen bridge sessions at the club during June, averaging a 60.94% game over the course of the entire month.  It's possible Joe is on a mission, as he is less than 30 masterpoints away from becoming a Diamond Life Master.  When that happens we expect there to be a party.  But for now, he's your King of Clubs for the month of July.

Joe was followed by Teri Blu [Bloomington], who picked up a nice 23.99 masterpoints in Minnesota clubs last month - and Keith Connolly came in 3rd.  Your "Top Ten" list for this month is located to your left.

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
UPDATE:  As of 8:30pm, no results are online from this afternoon in Maple Grove; the ACBL's servers have been down much of the day.  (It's not just Minnesota tournament results that are not available, nobody's results from this afternoon are posted.)  We'll have an update on day 1 and the masterpoint winners from the big tournament just as soon as the ACBL gets back online.

PREVIOUSLY:  The Aquatennial Sectional gets going this morning!  Todd Flowerday [Coon Rapids] who is this year's partnership chair sent a photo of the room after set-up this morning; it's a great facility in which to play.  Directions to the Maple Grove Community Center can be found by clicking here, and the flyer for this tournament can be found by clicking here.

Here is a look to your left of the Minnesota players that have advanced to their next masterpoint rank.  Congratulations to these 19 players who have taken the next step in the bridge journey!  Click on the image to your left to open it in a new window for enlarged viewing (or printing) - and when you see one of these players in your local club, be sure to give them a pat on the back.  Or - and just hear me out here - get a cake and celebrate in style.

STAC TABLES OFF, BUT STILL ON PAR

We just wrapped up another week of STaC play across Minnesota (and all of D14) - if you're wondering how tables are doing with these District-wide sectional silver-point games, they are down from the pre-COVID years (naturally).  But they're not down significantly more than our other tournaments.

On the left - the top chart shows the average number of tables per day of the week for D14 STACs.  (NOTE that some D14 STACs include other districts, in order to maximize payouts.  The STAC tournaments used here for comparative purposes are the D14 STACs that are for D14 clubs only, and don't include other parts of the country.)

The bottom chart (left) shows the relative comparative daily table counts to our pre-COVID era.  A couple of notes that have skewed some of the daily comparisons: first, there were a couple of healthy Friday evening games pre-pandemic that didn't return. . .so Friday's comparative tables are way down, thanks to that AND that this year games were canceled due to Friday falling on the 4th of July.  Second, there are a couple of Saturday morning games now in effect that were not in play before 2020, so Saturday's comparative tables are through the roof.  But overall, the STAC tables in play are about 65.5% what they were before the pandemic.  Like any other face-to-face bridge competition (whether a club game or a regional tournament), this is somewhat to be expected.  You can help improve these numbers when our next STAC tournament rolls around in September.  PLUS you can get a lot of silver points in the comfort of your own club.  That happens the last week in September, so you won't have too long to wait.

THE CARDS FLY TOMORROW
 Let's get ready to rrrrrrrrrrrrrumble!

July 8 2025
LATEST ACBL 5-5-5 REPORT
The end of 2025's second quarter also marks the issuance of the ACBL's 5-5-5 report for all their bridge units.  While the ACBL used to provide its units with 11% of the unit's membership fees, that all changed 18 months ago.  In an effort to get units more active in retaining and recruiting players, the decision was made to limit a unit's baseline to 5% of membership fees - with incentives to get an additional 10% depending on how active each unit is.
With the 2nd QTR report coming out from the ACBL, it's a mixed bag for Minnesota bridge units (as it likely is everywhere).  The good news is that both units are getting money for meeting some ACBL recruiting targets.  The ACBL has now provided monies to both Units 103 and 178, as seen in the chart on your left.  The figures that the ACBL pays are based on the number of new bridge recruits, so to help these reimbursement figures go up - your help is needed in getting new players into the game.
Next is the report on how our units are doing relative to the "old" reimbursement program that the ACBL had in place.  Across the ACBL's 286 units, the average reimbursement with the new 5-5-5 program is 80.5% of the money that units used to get.  Unit 103 is getting 89.1% of their previous reimbursements (doing better than average) while Unit 178 is getting 75.5% (slightly less than the average ACBL unit).  The baseline for ACBL units (absolute minimum for a unit that does nothing) is 45.5%, so both Minnesota units are making a good effort here.
Active membership in Minnesota's units has fallen in the past 12 months, which is not just a problem for Minnesota, but for the ACBL overall.  The percent of active membership lost in the last 12 months for Unit 103 is -8.4%, while Unit 178 has lost -15.0%.  This just reinforces that your help is needed in introducing new bridge players to the duplicate bridge game which we love!
Another positive note from the most recent ACBL 5-5-5 report is that among all of D14 clubs, Minnesota's clubs are 1-2 with new memberships in the past 12 months.  Unit 103 has seen 54 new members, with Unit 178 seeing 37 new members.
All of the ACBL's 5-5-5 data is available thanks to the good people at BridgeFinesse, and you can check out the data for yourself by clicking here.  If you are wondering how Minnesota's units are doing with this program compared to the other bridge units across the upper Midwest, all of the data on the 5-5-5 program across D14's clubs can be found by clicking here.

ACBL-WIDE INSTANT MATCHPOINT GAME NEXT WEDNESDAY
One week from tomorrow, the ACBL will hold one of it's Instant Matchpoint games.  This is the game played in your local club, with travelers to provide the number of matchpoints for each hand immediately (or, "instant"ly).

Participating clubs in this game can be found by clicking here.  So far, three clubs are offering the game (the Bridge Center of St Paul, Woodbury, and Rochester).  If your local bridge club is not listed, check with your local bridge manager or club owner to see if they're willing to participate in the Wednesday afternoon excitement - it's not too late - and then get a partner to play.  The top award in every district is 10.00 MPs - so it's a great opportunity to score some masterpoints,

July 7 2025
ALL HAIL MINNESOTA'S QUEEN OF THE STaC
And that concludes a week of D14's Royal STaC in Minnesota clubs.  It's Marylou Doerrie [Coon Rapids] who is Minnesota's Queen of the STaC this time around.  Marylou played six (6!) times last week, averaging 54.59% over those six games to earn 8.00 masterpoints.  Well done, Marylou!  She was followed by the Duchess and Duke, Sharon Anderson [Eagan] and Roger Anderson [Eagan], playing all week long (as if they were trying to somehow make up for lost time) - and the Marquess Todd Flowerday [Coon Rapids] rounds out the Court.

Every Minnesota player (including us serfs) who earned some multi-pigmented scratch this past week is listed on the chart to your right.  Click on it to enlarge it and open it in a new window - and we'll do it all again at the next Royal STaC coming up in September.

MINNESOTA NAP QUALIFIERS - SO FAR
Through the first month of North American Pairs qualifying, 401 Minnesota players are qualified to go on in the competition already.  That's a terrific number!  More than half of these Minnesota players (203) are Non-Life Masters with less than 750 MPs (Flight "C"), with 161 Flight "B" players and 37 qualified in Flight "A" or the Championship Flight.

If you're not sure if you are one of the 401 Minnesota qualifiers - then click here to check out the ACBL's master list for Minnesota's two units.

GOLD GOES TO 179 MINNESOTA STaC PLAYERS
- and the week of D14 STaC games is not even yet done!  179 Minnesota players have scored some gold points (some getting gold "dust") in the past five days, with your current leaderboard through Saturday morning to your right.

Marylou Doerrie [Coon Rapids] has taken over the top spot on the leaderboard for the week so far, followed closely by Todd Flowerday [Coon Rapids].  But there is still time to catch them!

There are two bridge games left in Minnesota during this STaC Weekend, with the 12:30pm game held at the Bridge Center of St Paul this afternoon - and another game in Roseville at 6:30pm tomorrow.  Both of these games are open masterpoint games, so everyone can play - and anyone can get some big points.

OH, TO ONLY HAVE THEIR CAKE CONCESSION
Scott Krupke [Little Falls] presenting the celebratory cake to newly-minted Bronze Life Master Kathy Stadther [St Cloud] at the Whitney Senior Center last month.  "Better late than never" was the quote used for the delay of a couple weeks for the celebration, and we could not agree more.  Congratulations to Kathy!  (And to everyone who helped celebrate.)

NEXT WEEK'S AQUATENNIAL SECTIONAL
Yes, it's a terrific holiday weekend on the way, and you may not be thinking about bridge next week - but that doesn't mean it's not happening.  The Aquatennial Summer Sectional starts next Wednesday - held this year in Maple Grove at the Maple Grove Community Center - with directions to the Community Center found here.

It's Pair/Team games and 499er pairs Wednesday and Thursday, and then Friday's Swiss Teams to complete the tournament.  The flyer is just to your left.  Have a great weekend THIS weekend and we will see you next week.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGES
With the upcoming 4th of July, here's your friendly reminder that there is a game that will take place on Friday at 10am at the Bridge Center of St Paul.  If you would like to see some fireworks at the table, make a plan to play Friday in Roseville.

The Edina Senior Center is closed on Friday; so no Plymouth BC game this week there.  The St Cloud DBC cancelled their Thursday and Friday games this week; and the Rochester DBC cancelled their online game Friday.

Whatever your plans this weekend, stay safe and we'll see you back at the table next week!

THE BATTLE FOR MINNESOTA ROYALTY
The Royal STaC this week is underway, and with Monday's games in the books, already 59 Minnesota players have earned some gold, silver, red, and black points.  Sitting atop the leaderboard at the moment would be a pair of "C" players from Rochester, Betty Shidler [Rochester] and Jean Nigbur [Rochester].  You can find the results for Monday's games across all of D14 along with all of the scores and results for this week-long royalty-fest by clicking here.  Your Top 40 players to date are listed to your right.

NOTE that there is a delay with the overall awards posting of 24-48 hours; the ACBL wants to make sure that everyone has a chance to submit their gamefile to get counted. . .and sometimes that takes a day or two.  All points will be listed as silver until next week, when the magic happens and it gets posted as 25% gold, 25% red, 25% silver, and 25% black.

NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS TABLES UP +2.8%
There's one month down and two months to go with the North American Pairs club qualifying this summer; Minnesota's NAP tables are at 290 for the first month (that's up +2.8% from last year).  There are four hundred Minnesota players who have already qualified so far for this year's NAP competition. . .that list can be found by clicking here.  More NAP games are coming during July - with 1/2 red and 1/2 black points for everyone (including those who have already qualified).  It's a great start to the NAP season, and even if you've already qualified, remember these NAP games pay big, BIG masterpoints.

MINNESOTA CLUB TABLE REPORT: 1st HALF OF 2025
It sure seems like this year is going quickly, as you've already entered into the second half of 2025.  With six months of bridge reported to the ACBL, how is it going in Minnesota bridge clubs so far?

Looking at club tables during the first six months of the year, it's a bit of a mixed bag compared to 2024.  ("Club tables" here would be face-to-face club tables only, with no tournament tables or online tables included in these table counts.)  For the first 26 weeks of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, the overall Minnesota table count is up by 59 tables.  Last year, Minnesota had 4,920.5 tables in play from Jan 1 to June 30.  This year it was 4,979.5 (see the chart below on the right for how we're doing with nearby states).

The chart below on the left shows Twin Cities Metro area club tables are off by -2.0% so far this year (3,010 vs 3,072 last year).  Outstate club tables are up by +6.5% over the same period (1,970 vs 1,849), but as is typically the case with statistics, there's more to the story.  There's no greater effort made by a Minnesota club to drum up players and provide their bridge players with opportunities (and fun) than the St Cloud DBC covering Greater Central Minnesota - and it shows.  All of the outstate's increase during this period came from St Cloud, who picked up +130 tables since last year (see the second chart from the left).  Without those St Cloud numbers, outstate Minnesota tables were essentially flat over the first half of 2025 (-0.2%), with statewide tables off by -1.4%.

We're all familiar with the present trend in table counts, and of course it's not a trend that is limited to Minnesota, nor is it a trend that's likely to change.  But since we are unable to bottle whatever is in the water up in St Cloud, it's all the more important to help out at your local club - volunteering, teaching, encouraging new members and being an active part of your local club (and unit!).  That can only help our 2nd half 2025 table counts and (more importantly) our bridge community overall.

EARLY FIREWORKS FOR THE NEW LIFE MASTERS
Quite the get-together Sunday evening for Minnesota's newest Life Masters!  Seven tables of players helped celebrate (L to R:) Earl Conner [Woodbury], Rebecca Wooden [St Paul], Gail Baev [Woodbury], Florian Lauer [St Paul], and Gregory Dorr [St Paul] having become Life Masters at this year's Gopher Regional.  The celebration was held at the Bridge Center of St Paul, with a celebratory pot luck just prior to the Sunday evening game.

Here is the scoop from Todd Flowerday [Coon Rapids], the BCSP's Assistant Manager:
"Five of Minnesota's newest Life Masters competed in the Bridge Center of St Paul's celebration night.  We honored them with a potluck dinner of chicken, salads, charcuterie spreads both plain and fancy, and a celebratory cake.  Two of them, Greg Dorr and Gail Baev, partnered up and finished 3rd in B/C and 6th overall out of 14, good enough for .87 in the upgraded club championship.  There was some tough competition in the house--five pairs in flight A gave stiff opposition.  New LM Rebecca Wooden and her partner finished just a half matchpoint out of the awards circle.  Florian Lauer and Earl Conner played with regular partners and ended with games in the forties, percentage-wise.

Perhaps a wake-up call that other Minnesota bridge players are pursuing the Life Master goal, NLM Linus Bendel-Stenzel and partner topped the game, and a NLM pair finished 3rd.  It seems like once you make Life Master, the competition comes from below as well as above."
            --Todd Flowerday
