TOURNAMENT MASTERPOINT LEADERS
Here is a friendly reminder that with the Pair/Team games that are held at tournaments like the one this weekend, the ACBL's masterpoint list on their website is not correct.  When you play in a pair/team game, you only get the higher masterpoint award (whether it is from the pairs portion or the team portion) - but not both!  The ACBL's list of masterpoint winners won't be corrected until well after the tournament is over.

With all that in mind, your "Top 20" Masterpoint Winners through day 2 of the Winter Sectional are to your right.  David Collins [Fridley] is the current leader, with over 24 masterpoints in just two days.  Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] is right on Dave's heels in 2nd place.  Among the Non-Life Masters playing at the tournament, Xintao He [Rochester] leads all NLMs with 11.46 masterpoints. . .but Ethan Lynch [Blaine] is not far behind at all with 10.97.

Two more days to go!  Plenty of time for everyone to get a bit more scratch.

SCENES FROM THE WINTER SECTIONAL
TOP ROW (L): That's Mary Helen Gill [Long Lake] and Victoria Slomiany [Edina], who earned a first place finish in the opening session of the tournament.  TOP ROW (R): The director-in-charge, Kimberly Hayward [Bayport], who is making sure everything running smoothly by putting out another fire in the Command and Control Center.  SECOND ROW (L): A look at tables for day 1, which were off by -7.1% from last year.  No major snowstorms on the way this weekend, and a warming trend is expected - so there's plenty of time to make up some of those tables.  SECOND ROW (R):  Joan Lossing [Woodbury] and Dennis Schulte [Woodbury] came in 1st place in the Friday afternoon 499ers, picking up 1.60 silver points.  Joan won the NABC FREE PLAY in the afternoon, with Tom Bedford [St Paul] winning the NABC FREE PLAY in the morning.  (There are still six more FREE PLAYs left to hand out this weekend!)

The open crowd on Friday saw David Collins [Fridley] playing with Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] coming in 1st place in the afternoon; Brian Crossley [Burnsville] and Dennis Cerkvenik [Minnetonka] won the morning session, picking up 7.56 silver points.  Twelve players on three teams tied for 1st place in the teams part of the competition Friday afternoon, so you can find out more about this dozen by clicking here.

Tomorrow it's a regionally-rated two-session Open Pairs and 499er pairs, which will benefit the Minnesota Education Fund.  Then it's bracketed teams coming up on Sunday - so there's a lot more bridge yet to take place this weekend.

WINTER TOURNAMENT UNDERWAY
The Minnesota Winter Tournament got underway this morning, with 24 tables of players in Roseville at the Bridge Center of St Paul.  In addition to the bridge, the tournament sponsor (Unit 103) is giving away a free NABC play to someone in the room prior to each session.  This morning, it was Grant Duffrin [Roseville] that picked up the free play - so you know it's going to get used!

The morning session saw Barry Purrington [Eagan] and David Collins [Fridley] come in 1st place overall, scoring 7.79 silver points.  The teams portion of the pair/teams game was a tie, with eight players picking up 6.01 silver points!  These eight were Teri Blu [Bloomington], Sandy Nelson [Minneapolis], Richard Day [Shoreview] Thomas Kiemen [Cottage Grove], Jack Huie [Minneapolis], Pete Peterson [Osceola WI], David Lui [Roseville], and Mary McIntyre [St Paul].  The 499ers in the morning session (7 tables worth!) found Mary Helen Gill [Long Lake] and Victoria Slomiany [Edina] coming in 1st.  They scored 1.95 silver points.

In the afternoon session, with another 22 tables in play, Dennis Cerkvenik [Minnetonka] and Bill Voedisch [Marine] won the pairs competition - they earned 7.33 silver points for their effort.  The afternoon team competition found Stan Jurgensen [St Louis Park], Nora Walker [Minneapolis], Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park], and Michael Cassel [Roseville] coming in 1st overall for 6.45 silver points.  The afternoon 499er champs were Lars Roe [Minneapolis] and dad Andy Roe [St Paul].  They earned 1.72 silver points.  There was another FREE PLAY to the NABC courtesy of the tournament sponsor (Unit 103) in the afternoon, this time going to Richard Day.

The action (and more NABC free plays) continues tomorrow morning.  All of the results of this tournament along with masterpoint winners can be found by clicking here.

$556 IN COSTCO SNACKS
Seriously, the employees had a good laugh at the checkout line when I explained what it was all for.  Do your bridge blog editor a huge favor and help get rid of some of this by playing this weekend in Roseville.

SOMETHING'S HAPPENING HERE
And what it is, it ain't exactly clear.  But with membership in the ACBL on a rather steady decline, club table counts are not following suit - they are actually on the rise across the country as we start 2026.  The 52-week ACBL rolling average of weekly F2F club tables passed 20,350 for the 1st time since the big reopening in 2021 (this happened the week ending 1/18/26).  Compared to one year ago, table counts from local clubs nationwide rose +4.0% in the week ending 1/18/26.

Locally, it's even better news.  The first four weeks of 2026 at Minnesota's bridge clubs wound up with 783.5 face-to-face tables in play; that's an increase of 52.5 tables over the same period in 2025 or +7.2%.  A much nicer increase than that of the ACBL as a whole for the period, that would mean we are definitely ahead of the game.  A look at table counts for all of the Midwestern states, compared to the same four-week period starting 2025, shows that Minnesota's gain both in nominal tables and in percentage increase from last year tops all six Midwest states.

So what's happening here?  An annual decline in ACBL membership of more than 6.7% would indicate a smaller pool of players available to play at the club.  That would suggest fewer tables across the ACBL as a whole, not more tables.  And it's not tables per game that we're talking about here, so consolidation of games is not the answer, although that wouldn't have much effect on overall tables anyway.  Existing ACBL players appear to be playing more often - and while it may be hard to pin down why this week-to-week trend is moving so positively (and consistently in a positive direction), we're really happy to see it.

ACBL REGIONALS STUMBLE OUT OF THE GATE
2026 is getting off to an interesting year across the ACBL, with two of the top three ACBL regionals having moved their regional tournaments forward by almost a month.  The Houston Lone Star Regional (#3 last year in attendance) and the Hilton Head Island Regional (#2 last year) were held last year in mid-to late-February.  Houston's tournament was down by -26.1%, although they had to cancel their last day due to the weather.  If you just look at the six days Monday-Saturday at Houston, and compare it to the same six days last year in Houston, they were still off by -21.5% of 2025's table count.  That's quite a drop in one year.

This week, the Hilton Head Island Regional is underway.  Last year, it nearly overtook Gatlinburg TN in table counts, but this year it's not looking like much of a competitor for American's Favorite Regional.  Only two days in, and already Hilton Head's table counts are down -23.7% compared to the first two days of 2025.

Coincidence?  Or the start of a pattern?  It's something to keep an eye on.  There's a lot of the year ahead of us, but for these two tournaments to stumble out of the gate like this, we're hoping it's not anything contagious.

SOMETIMES THERE'S JUST NO ESCAPING WINTER
Winter weather can wreak havoc with scheduling bridge tournaments months earlier, but that's not typically a problem for the Lone Star Regional in Houston TX.  This event was held this past week, with a modification to Saturday's schedule - and cancellation of all Sunday events - due to the winter weather Houston was experiencing.

Sometimes there is just no escaping winter weather!  And yet kudos to Minnesota players who enjoy bridge in a somewhat warmer climate this time of year.  The Lone Star Regional is frequented each year by Jane Schmidt [St Paul], who plays with her sister Jean Kiesel [Layfayette LA].  Jane made the trip to Houston last week and scored 30.67 gold points by helping her sister and their team to win one KO and come in 3rd in another KO.

Jane was not the only Minnesota player to make an effort to escape the winter weather here at home.  The team of Jeffrey Walker [Eagan], Rolf Hubmayr [Minneapolis], Marc Ashton [Excelsior], and Lou Tesler [Eden Prairie] also were in Houston to bring home 7.56 gold/red points playing in the Bracketed Teams among a couple of KOs as well.

It would appear that all these Minnesota players had fun playing in this tournament down in Texas even though it was abbreviated for the weather.  And if we know United Airlines, they should be home just in time for the NABC.

WINTER TOURNAMENT KICKS OFF THURSDAY
Too late to plan to play in the Minnesota Winter Tournament this week?  Hardly!  The weather outside may be a bit chilly, but the cards will be there for the playing starting at 10am Thursday morning.  Don't forget that in addition to all the silver points that will be wheeled out during the four-day tournament, each session of bridge will feature a FREE PLAY given away to the upcoming Summer NABC.  Click on the flyer to your left to check out the schedule.

UNIT 178's PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Last one of these "best of 2025" lists, we promise.  But between the Edina and Maple Grove games in the West Metro, who scored the best in 2025?

The Plymouth Bridge Club and Metro DBC run several games a week in the West Metro; we looked at 131 players in these games (more than 33 tables worth).  To your right are the results of those that played, along with their average score for the year and the total number of times they played in one of these Unit 178 club games over the past 12 months.

You won't find any tournament results here; nor any online game results.  If a player played half their 2025 games at the Duncan Bridge Club or in a Mesa AZ game while there during the winter, those aren't included either.  Even their Bridge Center of St Paul games have been filtered out of these results - only games played in Edina and Maple Grove were used to determine these scores.

Gary Knippenberg [Golden Valley] played in 44 games between the two clubs and averaged a 58.98% game in 2025 - that's tops among players.  Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park] was a very close second at 58.74% for the year, and Joe accomplished this playing in almost three times as many games as Gary (112 games).  (Several players played in less than ten games during 2025 at these clubs, which doesn't allow for a statistically significant comparable result.)  These aren't all the players who played in the West Metro last year - we're working on that - so our apologies if we've missed someone.

When it comes to 178's "Most Valuable Player" (that's the important-sounding-title given to the person who pretty much just spent the most money in table fees, almost single-handedly keeping the club afloat), Teri Blu [Bloomington] should have her own table at these clubs if she does not already.  She played in 184 games (of 231 possible for Teri, that's an 80% attendance rate) and was followed by Gary Sack [Minneapolis] who played in 178 games in 2025.  NOTE that whether you played in 100 games in the West Metro last year or only in 2 games, you're still a very valued player.

WE GET LETTERS FLYERS

Nobody likes thinking ahead more than we do, so we're always appreciative when tournament chairs get their flyers in order WELL in advance.  (Not just because it's great for scheduling and promoting, but as a Unit Tournament Coordinator, it's another thing to "cross off the list" of things that need to get done.)

Two Minnesota tournaments are scheduled for the month of June, and those flyers were just approved by the ACBL for distribution.  On your left, the top flyer is for a one-day NLM tournament down in Rochester on Thursday, June 4th.  A week and a half later is the Granite City Sectional, the open tournament that's held each June up in Greater Minnesota.  Once again this year it's being held at the Sauk Rapids Government Center, and promises three days of fun (three days of trouble?) at the table - it's also your last chance to earn some tournament experience before the big NABC tournament takes place a month later in July.

WINTER SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT FORECAST

It all gets going at the Bridge Center of St Paul on Thursday of this week.  In terms of getting to and from your silver point sectional?  The forecast for this tournament is for dry conditions with daytime temperatures above zero.  With everything that's going on with the weather across the country, that seems to be pretty much all you can ask for.

Bridge tournaments this week in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, along with the Carolinas, well, they are not so fortunate.

NORTH AMERICAN PAIRS ROSTER FINALIZED
UPDATE:  An eagle-eyed reader (H/T: Steve G) noticed that one of the "A" Flight players on our roster has too many masterpoints for that flight.  Not to worry, says, Keith Thompson [St Paul], our NAP Coordinator, who tells us:
"This list is not final until all pairs confirm that they will go to St. Louis.  One of the Flight C pairs only played in order to get Red points, and will be dropping out.  So there is no need to jump to any conclusions about this list.  It is preliminary and there will be changes."
PREVIOUSLY:  To your left is the D14 North American Pairs roster that will be eligible to play in the St Louis NABC starting February 26th.  As well as things are going here in Minnesota's bridge community, it can't be a big surprise that once again this field is dominated by local players.  Of the 14 pairs eligible to play in the NABC, 11 of them are from right here in Minnesota.

We will be following their progress (along with all local players) once the Spring NABC gets going next month; between now and then there will be plenty of opportunities for warm-up games for these players.

ONE CANNOT HAVE TOO MANY CAKES
Here's a shout-out to Jane Curtis [Clear Lake] who went past the 1,000 masterpoint mark last month - and had a celebratory cake at the St Cloud DBC to celebrate the milestone!  A shout-out to the St Cloud DBC is also in order, as they may be single-handedly keeping local Stearns County bakeries afloat with these celebrations, but we can't have too many cakes.  Congratulations to Jane and her partners (and opponents, who all helped in some manner or form) - and now it's on to the next cake milestone.

January 23 2026
75.40%

Combing through results to find this month's big games, lo and behold there's a couple of Minnesota players who earned a 75.40% game this month!  Dan Knier [Waite Park] and Wendy Hennes [Sartell] played in an 8-table open game at the St Cloud DBC about a week and a half ago. . .and out of the 28 boards they played, 10 of them were solid tops.  In addition to the two big stars on your left, there's a graph that goes through their game round-by-round.  They started things off with an 81.25% round and just kept it going from there.  Only one of their seven rounds was below 68%, and while we are impressed with the number of 70% games we see each month (and they are impressive) - this is the first 75% in awhile.  Nice going.

UNIT 103 GETS ITS ACT TOGETHER

Unit 103's Board had their first meeting of 2026 Tuesday evening, with an organizational meeting to elect officers and update responsibilities for the New Year.  Sue Greenberg [Byron] was re-elected as President of Unit 103, with Warren Nelson [Cloquet] re-elected as Vice-President.  Dan McIntyre [St Paul] will take over the financial responsibilities of the Unit, and Tom Owens [Woodbury] has volunteered to continue to handle the secretarial duties.  Appointments included Matt Belau [Rochester] as the Unit Tournament Coordinator, with Rajiv Kapadia [Mankato] in charge of membership and Bill Voedisch [Marine] in charge of the Unit 103 trailer.

The full roster of the 103 Board is to your left; Unit Meeting minutes can always be found by clicking here (but only as they are approved and then provided by the respective unit secretaries).

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON SPECIAL

Once a month, the St Cloud DBC holds a Wednesday afternoon game; this month's Wednesday game was a special game (with special people) for a very special person.

One of the underrated bridge movements in duplicate is the individual winner movement - where everyone plays with everyone.  This week, St Cloud club manager Scott Krupke [Little Falls] set up an individual movement game with 7 tables of players for their monthly Wednesday game.  There was also some fundraising involved, as the occasion for this month's special event had to do with supporting one of St Cloud's players who couldn't make it this time around: Nancy Balfanz [St Cloud], who is working very hard to recover from Guillian-Barré syndrome.

Nancy was afflicted and hospitalized on Christmas Day; originally paralyzed from the neck down and unable to speak, Nancy is now able to speak - but is currently still paralyzed from the waist down and unable to fully use her hands.  The good news is that she is making progress [Ed.:  If you've ever met this woman, you know there is no keeping her down], and the good people at the St Cloud club got together Wednesday to raise some money for her meals and show their support for this incredibly well-loved player.  If you know Nancy or are otherwise just inclined to help with her meal situation, the link to her Meal Train page can be found by clicking here.

Winners from this wild Wednesday at the bridge table can be found by clicking here.

PLEASE NOTE we would not post such private information about an individual in such a public forum as this without their consent to do so and without first running the copy by them for editorial control.  Connie Nelson [Avon] was kind enough to provide photos of the St Cloud game.

FRIDAY'S COLD CLAIMS FIRST BRIDGE GAME
FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE:  The Minn Grand Slam Club has elected to cancel their in-person game at Roseville and have it online.  Here's David's update from Friday morning:
As much as we enjoy a face-to-face game, today's weather suggests we should stay inside and stay warm.  So this week, the Friday Night Game will go online on BBO.

Find us at VACB101691 for a pairs game.  Game time will be 6:30 pm CT, $6/person.
          --Dave
UPDATE:  The Minn Grand Slam Club is still planning to have a game Friday evening at 6:30pm in Roseville; but they'd like you to RSVP just ASAP.  Here's David Neiman [Minneapolis]:
If you are planning to play in the Friday Night Game tomorrow, please RSVP to let us know you're coming.  With the cold weather, we don't want people going out unnecessarily if we end up not having enough tables.
          --Dave
The Edina Senior Center is closed for the day Friday due to the cold, as well.  This too shall pass.

PREVIOUSLY:  The frigid Friday weather has claimed its first bridge game, the West Metro Social Duplicate game Friday in Minnetonka.  Norrie Thomas [Plymouth] sent us this:
Due to cold weather we will cancel bridge at the Marsh on Friday January 23, 2026.

    Please stay warm!!
          --Best, Norrie
Chances are this won't be the last game canceled due to the frosty Friday in store.  A reminder that there is a bridge game online that is sponsored by the Rochester DBC Friday.  It's on BBO at 12:30pm and under the VACB132373 director.

NABC PR COMMITTEE MEETS

The NABC PR Committee met this week to discuss upcoming outreach and promotion as we head into the final six months before the big Summer NABC.

Warren Nelson [Cloquet], Patti Stuhlman [Minneapolis], Sherry Cyza [Minneapolis], Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie], and Matt Belau [Rochester] met online to plan the way forward heading into the final stretch.  This month, the focus was on newer players (those with under 750 masterpoints).  During this month's meeting the committee was joined by Keith Thompson [St Paul], who talked with the group regarding outreach to teachers, unsanctioned clubs, and newer players (0-5 masterpoints) - and how the committee could help promote the NABC to these newer players.

The committee also stressed letting advancing players know that there are free lessons the first weekend of the NABC for them; a free reception and lunch on Saturday July 11; and on Friday July 10th there's are games that are open to 0-5 masterpoint players where they play at no cost.  It sounds like a really great deal!

Finally, reservations for the hotels opened this week.  Although you can send an email to the ConferenceDirect Housing Bureau to set up a hotel reservation, Patti explained her experience with the Spring NABC was that you're much better off either calling or making the reservation online yourself (rather than email them).

Everything will get sent to Jane Schmidt [St Paul] for her monthly blast to players and of course, you'll see it here on the Bridge Blog.  One question the committee couldn't quite answer - will Minnesota's ice be gone by July?  Stay tuned.

SUMMER NABC HOTEL RESERVATIONS: GET READY - GET SET -
Today is the day you are finally able to make that NABC Hotel reservation for the big tournament here in July.  Reservations open today (January 21st), and you can make that reservation when you are ready by calling 855-956-0776.  You can also make the reservation online - but we're told that sending an email to acbl-at-conferencedirect-dot-com is not the best way to get a hotel room.  (E-mails sent to the ConferenceDirect mailbox are returned telling you to call or go online (H/T Patti S).  You'll have better luck by calling them directly or making the reservation online.

NOTE that the ACBL has a non-refundable deposit cancellation policy on hotel reservations:
Beginning on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Minneapolis Summer 2026 NABC will charge a cancellation fee of $100.00 for any cancellations.  Beginning Tuesday, April 14, 2026, a cancellation fee of $150.00 will be charged for any cancellations.  Beginning Tuesday, May 19, 2026, a cancellation fee of $200.00 will be charged for any cancellations.  This cancellation fee will appear on your credit card statement as “CONFDIRECT* NABC2026”.   Cancellations made directly with the hotel will also incur this fee.

FRIGID FRIDAY FRAUGHTFULLY FORECAST
 Here comes the cold.

Temperatures this week will plunge below zero - and stay there - for at least 48 hours.  As cold snaps go, this won't be particularly long; just a couple of days.  But what it lacks in staying power, it's making up in its swing of the pendulum.

High temperatures this Friday - high temps - could be in the teens below zero across all of Minnesota.  So if you were thinking about playing in a Friday game of bridge, you'll want to make sure your car will start after the game. . .and that there is plenty of cocoa or coffee at the game to keep everyone warm.  Here's a list of Friday games across the state and the game time temperature that's expected:
Bridge Center of St Paul's Friday 10am Open Pairs:   -12F
Minn Grand Slam Club 6:30p Open Pairs (Roseville):   -17F
St Cloud DBC 12:30pm Open Pairs:   -14F
    Edina 12:45pm Open Pairs:   -11F
Rochester DBC 12:30pm Online Open Pairs:   71F

CLUB CALENDARS FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY
The shortest month of the year for cards would be the four weeks coming up in February; it's also the last opportunity to qualify for the GNT at your local club.  (While it is true that qualifying means nothing in the GNT since you can pay $20 to play in the District 14 Final, the fun and excitement of team games plus 1/2 red and 1/2 black sectionally-rated points should be enough to have these games get scheduled and have you attend.)

In addition to the double card, you might see some red around the 14th (Valentine's Day) - but lots of opportunities to get into some trouble abound.  February is Education Foundation Fund month across the ACBL, so you'll see some big masterpoint games on the schedule - including the next ACBL-wide game on Saturday, February 7th.  The top prize in D14 is 15.00 masterpoints - which was won by a pair right here in Minnesota during last month's ACBL-wide game.  Here are the latest bridge calendars around Minnesota clubs for February (updated as they are issued):

MONTHLY ACBL MEMBERSHIP REPORT ISSUED
The ACBL's Membership Report for last month was released this week.  Across the ACBL, membership year-over-year was down by 8,878 players (or down -6.94%).  The total members among the ACBL crowd is now under 120K, and that is the first time that this has happened.

A previous post on this blog documented the year-over-year drop in Minnesota's players (-6.31% for the October-December period) which is actually slightly better than the ACBL-wide drop from last month.

There's not too much Minnesotans can do about what's happening across all of the ACBL (with the exception of putting on a good show at the NABC this July) - but locally, you won't hear it often enough - get involved, help mentor, encourage new players, volunteer when you can at your club or at a tournament.  All of these things help with our membership and with our games, and they'll help keep Minnesota's player losses to a minimum.

January 18 2026
A CALL TO THE NON-SANCTIONED PLAYERS
Pretty much every Minnesota bridge player either plays in - or knows of - a non-sanctioned bridge game.  They are all over the state, and with good reason - bridge is such a terrific game.

Now, Keith Thompson [St Paul] is putting together a list of non-sanctioned games so that he can contact players and invite them to participate in the upcoming NABC.  The plan is to have players attend the NABC that might not normally either know about it or think they'd have fun at it.  (Because let's face it, of course they'd have fun.)  Players who would be new to the ACBL with less than 5 masterpoints will play for free on the first Friday, and there are free lessons and a free reception with lunch the first weekend for advancing and newcomer players.

It's a great opportunity to allow non-sanctioned game players to experience a tournament atmosphere - and expand Minnesota's player base, as some of these players will no doubt take to playing in sanctioned games.  If you know of a church, or a community center, a senior center, any neighborhood non-sanctioned bridge game, let Keith know about it (along with the appropriate contact information).  Even if you know someone that does some teaching of bridge!  It's not as if Keith doesn't have enough to do already - but he'll compile all the information and reach out to these players in the next few months.  Hopefully the result will be the achievement of our goal to see more players in regular club games as well as providing newer players with a terrific tournament experience.

MINNESOTA vs THE MIDWEST

Having a look at club games and table counts around the Upper Midwest, Minnesota is once again (for the most part) outperforming our neighboring states.  Previous posts on this bridge blog have documented the +5.0% increase in F2F club tables across Minnesota last year, and with the exception of Wisconsin's +6.4% increase, did better than every other state - and did do better than all of the other states in D14.  It's not just tables, though, where Minnesota is excelling, but in available club games to players as well.  In 2025, we saw a +9.2% increase in games held - that's tops among the six states.  With most everyone else flat (or in decline), you have to be pretty pleased with how bridge in Minnesota is going.

Will it always be good news here?  Not likely.  But for now - we are holding our own.  And remember that every club game you support, every advancing player you mentor, every time you volunteer to help at a tournament, all of these things add up.  Heading into 2026 (and the hosting of the Summer NABC), this is news of which all Minnesota bridge players can be proud.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Renovations that took place at the Woodbury's Bridge Club home forced them to play (and teach) in a different location during the past year.  But that's all behind them now, as they have moved back to their home field advantage location at the Woodbury Central Park building.  (And the new card room looks pretty nice, indeed.)

The Prairie Room is on the second floor, just off the elevator at the front of the building; this is where the cards happen.  Their Wednesday games will continue to be played in North St Paul at the American Legion, and everything else is now back at Central Park.  The Woodbury BC website is located here; and the Prairie Room (pictured, left) has a capacity for 18 tables of players - so you're invited to play in a Woodbury game and see if we can max the new space out.

UNIT UNIFICATION: 178 SAYS "NOT SO FAST"
Almost five weeks ago, representatives from the Boards of Units 103 and 178 came to an agreement on By-Laws, Policies, and a framework to create one bridge unit across Minnesota.  This was after fourteen months of discussion among the sub-committee, and follows 178's repeated desire over the past several years to have one bridge unit representing all of the state.

Following the sub-committee's agreement, all that remained was for the larger 178 board to approve the plan and get everything in motion.  But this week the 178 board decided the decision to approve the plan (and become one unit) was "too major for the board to decide".  Instead, they plan to put the decision to their membership, and that is not scheduled until the end of this year.  As a result, the issue of unit unification is back off the table.

It's not all bad news, of course - operating as two units and behaving as if we are one has worked pretty well to date.  Having worked so well in the past, the mutual cooperation between 103 and 178 won't change heading into the upcoming NABC (or beyond).  (And let's face it, Minnesota's bridge community would be doing great even if we had TEN units in the state.)

A huge shout-out goes out to Todd Flowerday [Coon Rapids], Matt Belau [Rochester], Sue Sanger [Bloomington], Warren Nelson [Cloquet], Susie Greenberg [Byron], and Keith Thompson [St Paul] for their efforts of the past 14 months to even get this far (considerably farther than any past efforts at unit unification).  They did everything that they could.  With the topic of unit unification behind us for now, we can all concentrate on the other gazillion bridge-related things going on, and there are a gazillion, and we're lucky to have that much happening with bridge in Minnesota.

UPCOMING LESSONS IN MINNETONKA
Attention advancing players - there's a new set of lessons that will be taught at The Marsh in Minnetonka next month!  Starting Mondays, February 16, from 10am to 12pm, you can improve your game and learn a bit more about this card game that we love.  Steve Gaynor [Arden Hills] will be your instructor for five consecutive Monday mornings.

This is all being set up by Norrie Thomas [Plymouth], whose flyer with all of the details is just to your left.  (You can click on it to open it in a new window, or just click here.)  The cost for each lesson is $17; partners are guaranteed; Norrie asks that you RSVP for each Monday you'd like to attend; and you can sign up for one or all of the lessons individually.  Steve knows a few things about bridge and we're glad he's willing to share some of that knowledge - here's your chance to let Norrie know you're coming and learn a few tips for tricks.

ABOUT THIS YEAR'S ICE-OUT
With the upcoming NABC in July, most Minnesota bridge players would probably agree we're hoping this year's ice-out is a lot earlier than usual.

ACBL-WIDE JUNIOR FUND GAME RESULTS
With only two ACBL clubs in all of D14 registered for yesterday's ACBL-wide Junior Fund Game - and both here in Minnesota - it's no surprise that all of the major masterpoint awards for the District stayed local.  Once a month during the months where the ACBL supports their various charities with extra masterpoint games, they hold an ACBL-wide event where you're competing against everyone in the ACBL.  Yesterday was one of those games, with the Bridge Center of St Paul and the Duluth DBC signed up - as of early this morning, only the Roseville club has reported results.  (UPDATE: The Duluth club signed up to be eligible for holding this game, but didn't after all - so the BCSP results should be it from Minnesota.)

Roger Anderson [St Paul] and Sharon Anderson [St Paul] appear to have taken the first place prize of 15.00 masterpoints in the game yesterday morning.  (Nothing's official until the ACBL says it is, and they won't make it official until roughly 48 hours after the event.)  William Voedisch [Marine] and Joseph Browan [Maplewood] came in 2nd place for 11.25 masterpoints.  Nice work for "a day at office!"

Click here to find the top masterpoint leaders across the entire ACBL and click here for the big masterpoint winners and scores for D14.  The top MP winners here in Minnesota are listed on the chart to your left.

The next ACBL-wide game to be held will be on Saturday February 7th, to benefit the ACBL International Fund (and also to benefit those that play in it and score big masterpoints!).  Check with your local club manager or director to see if they're running this game - and then sign up with a partner to compete against everyone in North America for another shot at big, big masterpoints.

MEET MINNESOTA'S NEWEST LIFE MASTER
It's David Lui [Roseville], who crossed the line to become a Life Master just two weeks ago!  Congratulations to David!

How did this major milestone happen to take place?  David played with Richard Trachy [Golden Valley] in one of the ACBL's gold point online Centennial games.  They scored well enough to come in 1st in their direction with a 59.58% score - good enough for 1.92 gold points and the gold he needed to cross the line.

Be sure to tell David "well done" when you see him next at the club (or if he's online).  And if there isn't a celebratory cake prior to the Winter Sectional Tournament at the end of the month, well, believe us, we'll be inquiring as to his preferred flavor.

January 12 2026
WHO'S PLAYING IN ROSEVILLE?
When the Bridge Center of St Paul made the move 12 miles west, part of what would make their move a success would be drawing some players from Unit 178 and across the river in Minneapolis.  Now that we're a couple of years into the new location, who's playing in Roseville?

We looked at three different events.  One, a random three-week period in 2025 (August 1st to 22nd); another, a random non-tournament special event (the Unit 103/178 NAP Final on September 5th last year); and a third, the BCSP's Holiday Sectional Tournament in December.

During regular club play (August), Unit 103 members made up 132 of the 221 players during the three-week period (59.7%).  Unit 178 players were about half that (67 players, or 30.3%) and there were 22 players that didn't belong to either unit (Wisconsin players, for example).  So the ratio of 103 players to 178 players was still about 2:1.

The Multi-Unit NAP Final also showed predominantly East Metro players at the event (39 of 64 players, or 60.9%).  Finally, the Holiday Sectional Tournament brought 205 players out for some silver points.  Over the four-day sectional, a lot more Minneapolis players came to play, composing 92 of the 205 (almost half, at 44.9%), with East Metro players composing 52.7% of the crowd.

That more Minneapolis players show up for tournament play isn't a surprise; these are more experienced players who love to play in tournaments.  And with Unit 178 scheduling the majority of their tournaments at this Roseville club, it's becoming a more familiar place for everyone in the Metro area.  That's got to help both the Roseville club and bridge in the Metro area as a whole in the long run.

HOT OFF THE PRESSES
The flyer for the North Star Sectional, the NABC Fundraiser event being held during Gopher Week at the Bridge Center of St Paul, was just issued.  Click on the image to your left to open it in a new window for perusing or printing.  Five days of sectional tournament action that also benefits the NABC Fundraising efforts locally AND the Minnesota Bridge Education Fund should be a rockin' time.

You'll see this flyer in your local club in another month or two - but we always like to promote these events just as soon as we're able to.

THURSDAYS AT 5PM: GET SMART
2026 sure is starting out terrific for Minnesota bridge and Minnesota bridge players.  Last seen providing regularly-scheduled lessons back in 2013, John Koch [St Cloud] has come out of semi-retirement to once again give Play of the Hand lessons at the St Cloud Duplicate Bridge Club.  (He's using a booklet that he, himself, authored!)

This past Thursday (January 8) was his first lesson, with central Minnesota area players enjoying the lesson at 5pm and then sticking around to play in the 6pm Thursday evening game.  John will be teaching his lessons each Thursday at 5pm - and Connie Nelson [Avon] is alerting (!) that all are welcome to come by and partake in the fun.  Connie adds this past Thursday was the first 9-table Thursday evening game in the middle of winter since at least prior to the COVID pandemic - and we would add the St Cloud club has room for several more tables of players, if you'd like to "Get Smart" with some help from John Koch and join in on the fun.

Here's a look at John's inaugural class from this week.

BIG BIG POINTS AVAILABLE TUESDAY
Tuesday January 13th, the ACBL is holding an ACBL-wide Junior Fund Game.  Clubs can opt-in to the game, where you'll be competing with pairs all across North America.  The result is that somebody is going to get some big, big, masterpoints.  (20.00 MPs is the top award nationwide, with 10.00 MPs the top in D14).

As of press time, there's just one club in Minnesota registered for this game, and that's the 10am Open game at the Bridge Center of St Paul.  (There are a few other Minnesota clubs that hold Tuesday games - if they're late entries to the party you can view all the clubs that have registered for this game by clicking here.)

These ACBL-wide games come around once every two or three months - so you won't want to miss out!

YOUR KING OF CLUBS FOR JANUARY
Who earned the most black points in Minnesota face-to-face clubs last month?  To kick off the year 2026, it's a familiar king on the throne, as Joseph Koester [Brooklyn Park] scratched in every game he played during the month of December.  He's your King Of Clubs for January.

This was an interesting month for local players, as the holidays and the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday tournament took quite a bite out of available games in which to score some club game points.  As it turns out, the top three Minnesota players for December all had more points than Joe did - but they all play somewhere else (where local Minnesotans don't have the chance to compete).  Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] has been playing all month in Naples, Florida; Gloria Georger [Rochester] has been playing in Ft Myers, FL; and Scott Krupke [Little Falls] is busy turning cards down in Mesa, AZ.  They'll be back in a few months - but for now, your top ten Minnesota club players are listed to your left.

January 9 2026
MINNESOTA'S MONTHLY MASTERPOINT MILESTONES
Twenty, yes twenty Minnesota players made the next move up the rank achievement ladder during the past month - and they're all listed to your left.  Among those that moved up on the bridge journey was David Lui [Roseville], who is Minnesota's newest Life Master!  Congratulations to David and to everyone who is having fun along the way to their next rank achievement by getting into trouble at the bridge table.

BRIDGE TONIGHT - IT'S ON
Here is a friendly reminder that the Minneapolis Grand Slam Club is holding a bridge game tonight at 6:30p over at the Bridge Center of St Paul.  There's no guarantee that you'll be bidding a Grand Slam in this Grand Slam club game, but chances are excellent that you'll find the cards fun.  They're planning to make this an every-Friday-evening game, and if you'd like to play tonight they'll still guarantee you have a partner should you need one.

They do ask that you RSVP either by emailing MGSCbridgeclub-at-gmail-dot-com or you can make a reservation by clicking here.

THREE WEEKS TO THE BIG WINTER TOURNAMENT
If your New Year's Resolution includes more bridge (HINT: yes!), then the first big tournament of 2026 is already on your bridge calendar.  But if not already scheduled for you, the Minnesota Winter Tournament is three weeks out - starting on Thursday, January 29th.

This tournament will feature 499er pairs each day at 10am and 230pm, and for the Open crowd, there will be Pair/Team games Thursday and Friday - a two-session Open Pairs on Saturday - and Bracketed Teams coming up on Sunday.  For the real newbies out there, 0-20 masterpoint players pay half-price when it comes to entry fees, and 0-5 masterpoint players play absolutely free.  (These reduced entry fees are thanks to the Minnesota Bridge Education Fund, who does really stellar work for bridge in Minnesota.  You can learn more about the Fund and even make a donation by clicking here.)  And don't forget about all the free plays for the upcoming NABC that will be handed out during the four-day tournament.  It should be quite the party.

What will the weather hold?  There's no way to know for sure, but right now the plan is for the cards to be hot hot hot - and the fun to be limitless.  Make your plans to partner up and play at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location for the upcoming Minnesota Winter Tournament at the end of this month.

PLAY FREE AT THE NABC THX TO UNIT 103
When it comes to promoting Minnesota's big NABC this July, what's a little friendly competition between Minnesota's bridge units?

Later this month, Unit 103 is sponsoring the Minnesota Winter Tournament which will be held at the Bridge Center of St Paul.  This year, Unit 103 is giving away ten (10!) free plays to the NABC in July during the Winter Tournament.  All you have to do is show up and play (and if you're reading this now, chances are good you were planning to play in it anyway).

Here's how it will work: each session of each day of the Winter Tournament, one person at the session will have their name drawn from everyone in the room for a FREE play at the NABC.  The more days you play in Roseville later this month, the more chances you'll have to win one (or more!) of the free plays.  Then - at the end of the tournament - one more drawing among all players during the week will take place for an additional two free plays at the Summer NABC.

It's their way of saying "thanks" for supporting your local bridge tournament - and of saying when it comes to getting players to the NABC "we are here to help".  So what about Unit 178?  TBH, they kicked off this friendly competition with a successful NABC fundraising drive featuring free plays with some of their local pros late last year.  And they'll have a chance to respond in March, when their Aquatennial Sectional is hosted over at the Bridge Center of St Paul location.  Stay tuned - and plan to play at the end of the month!

January 6 2026
TWO MONTHS LEFT FOR GNT QUALIFYING
A more accurate title for this post might be "Two Months Left For GNT Qualifying Games".  That's because there's a buy-in come mid-March for the D14 GNT Finals - so there's no need to qualify for the GNT during the six month period ending March 1 (and no need for clubs to run GNT games).  Does the buy-in option help the Grand National Teams program?  Or harm it?  We digress.

Through the first four months of six in which you can play in a GNT game at your club, Minnesota's clubs have run 189 GNT tables.  That's 255.4% of the GNT tables played in Minnesota one year ago during this same month period.  Where's the GNT action this year?  It's all Unit 178.  Last year, the Maple Grove game saw zero GNT tables during the entire six-month qualifying season.  This time around, already 27 tables have been played - and that's with two months to go.  The Edina game has played 81 GNT tables so far this season, compared to 35 tables all of last year - another huge increase.

You've got two more months to play and earn some red and black points - and whether or not you're interested in playing in the D14 GNT Finals, team games are always fun.  The Minneapolis Grand Slam Club is running a couple of online GNT games this month, on Tuesday January 6th and Tuesday January 20th, so if you're an online bridge player, there's a local option for you.  Their games are at 6:30pm.

Perhaps most important - don't forget that this year, you could represent D14 (and Minnesota) playing in the GNT at our local NABC in July!  So there's even more incentive to get in on the action.

January 5 2026
DOES SIZE MATTER?
Well, yes and no.  You don't need to have nine tables in a bridge game to have fun, although larger games tend to be preferred.  But here's a list of the Top 10 bridge games that are held in Minnesota, according to their size.  Tables per game.  The chart to your left lists the Top 10 games, plus their change from 2023 to last year and from last year to 2025.

Once again, the Wednesday Metro BC game is at the top of the heap, with 13.62 tables per game on average in 2025.  Right behind them is the Monday game in Edina, with 13.11 tables per game in 2025.  It can't be much of a surprise that all ten of these games are in largely populated areas (that's where the majority of the bridge players are located).  But the cumulative average tables per game for these ten games each week has been on the increase - from 91.04 tables in 2023 to 95.71 tables in 2024 to 96.60 tables last year.  It's another sign bridge players are playing more bridge as time goes on, and more of it in Minnesota.

LATEST ACBL 5-5-5 REPORT
The turn of the calendar this week did not just end the year, but also ended the ACBL's 2025 fourth quarter - where they compile all the information on the health of their 283 units.  (There were 286 units three months ago, but three units closed up shop recently.)  Up until 24 months ago, the ACBL used to provide its units with 11% of the unit's membership fees, a sort of "kickback" that allows units to operate.  In an effort to get units more active in retaining and recruiting players, the decision was made two years ago to limit a unit's baseline to 5% of membership fees - with incentives to get an additional 10% depending on how active each unit is.

The ACBL's monthly December Unit President meeting (held online) featured Bronia Jenkins [ACBL Mothership] indicating that despite the general disgruntlement with the 5-5-5 program across the ACBL, there would be no changes to the 5-5-5 program in the upcoming quarter.  So we're stuck with what we've got.

This most recent quarter ending 12/31 found both of Minnesota's units very close to each other's performance in the program.  Both had membership declines from 12 months ago by a bit more than 6%, and each saw the percent of active members drop by around 10.5%.

There is one difference this time around, and that is that Unit 178 did better than Unit 103 in terms of new membership reimbursement by the ACBL.  Unit 178's 81.8% of their old 11% reimbursement figure is slightly better than the ACBL's average reimbursement for this quarter of 81.2%, while Unit 103's 75.0% is their worst number so far in the seven-quarter history of the 5-5-5 program.  Since the program's inception, Unit 103 is still doing far better than most ACBL units - so we will see if this quarter's number was simply a blip or possibly something more troublesome.

All of the ACBL's 5-5-5 data is available thanks to the good people at BridgeFinesse, and you can check out the data for yourself by clicking here.  If you are wondering how Minnesota's units are doing with this program compared to the other bridge units across the upper Midwest, all of the data on the 5-5-5 program across D14's clubs can be found by clicking here.

MINNESOTA'S TOP 300 MOVERS AND SHAKERS
To your left is a list of the Top 300 Masterpoint earners through the end of 2025, along with their movement up (or down) on the big list.  A couple of caveats: first, these MP totals and their comparison are from the ACBL's December 31st reported masterpoints (to December 31st); the ACBL itself tends to use the February 6th masterpoint cycle for this kind of list, so YMMV.  Second, considerably more people have moved up on the list rather than down; that's because the ACBL doesn't list people who (for whatever reason) have left the game - so it's easier to move up than down (unless you've pretty much stopped playing and are remain an ACBL member).

Click on the list to your left to enlarge it and open it in a new window - and find your name on it perhaps!  The ACBL lists about 1,200 Minnesota players to look at, but 300 is as many as we could compare before needing some aspirin and a nap.  (And you can get started on your movement on the 2026 list this week.)

GET OUT THAT BRIDGE CALENDAR
That bridge calendar that you have for 2026, here's an opportunity to get it out and start filling it in.  Steve Gaynor [Arden Hills] has provided his latest schedule for tournaments all over the Midwest which will be of some interest to our local players.  Click on the image to your left, or simply click here to open his file in a new window for printing and perusing.  Then start partnering up!

MINNESOTA'S TOP MASTERPOINT EARNERS IN 2025
Jackson Wahl's [Minneapolis] 623.13 masterpoints over the last 12 months appears to be tops among all Minnesota players this past year - he's your top masterpoint earner for 2025.  The ACBL's most recent masterpoint engine run compared to 12 months ago shows that Jackson barely eclipsed Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] who earned 622.08 masterpoints during 2025.  Winning the bronze medal in 2025 was Charlie Carroll [St Paul], who earned 602.27 masterpoints.  (These are all quite impressive, when you consider that's an average of more than 50 masterpoints a month!)

Your Top 25 Masterpoint Earners for 2025 are listed on the chart to your left.  Congratulations to Jackson on his impressive total, to everyone else on the list, and those many players who aren't on it but did well enough to "get some scratch" of any amount during 2025!

NOTE: These masterpoint totals are based on December 6th to December 6th MP cycles.  The ACBL's masterpoint races for 2025 are based on a different masterpoint schedule, February 6th to February 6th.  So their (official) results may be different than what is posted here - it's just that we don't like to wait that long.

STARTING THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT
The annual "Glitz Game" at the Rochester DBC this week produced some very sparkling players.  Here are just a few of the outfits that shined along with the players that wore them - one photo includes the winners and on the runners-up.  But which is which?

(L: That's Cindy Heins [Rochester] and Dennis Schroeder [Rochester] as this year's winners, with Georgia Prosser [Rochester] and Tom Grigoleit [Rochester] (right) as your runners-up.)

OUTLOOKS FOR THE NEW YEAR
2026 has arrived!  What does that mean for bridge - and specifically, bridge in the state of Minnesota?

We asked our local unit board presidents, Sue Greenberg [Byron] (of Unit 103) and Keith Thompson [St Paul] (of Unit 178) to weigh in on 2025, their expectations of the new year, and what they'd like to see coming up in 2026.
From 103's Sue Greenberg:

2025 has been a great year for Minnesota bridge - clubs are thriving, tournaments provide fun (and points!), lessons are being offered and attended, and we are all enjoying the game we love.  I look forward to 2026 with great optimism - the nationals in Minneapolis, our regional [in Rochester], NLM, and sectional tournaments, continued growth in our clubs, unification of the two units, and a sense of wellbeing in our bridge community.

I want to thank all those that make it happen - club managers, directors, teachers, staff, volunteers, dealers, social committees, tournament coordinators, local boards, mentors, drivers that pick up people who no longer drive, and every person that attends a game or two at their local club.  I especially want to thank the Unit 103 board for their thoughtful discussions and advice to me throughout the year.  We are in transition after losing Lance Chamberlain, our longtime financial advisor, but I think we are on track to fill that position.

Happy New Year!
      --Sue Greenberg, Unit 103 President
 From 178's Keith Thompson:

Unit 178 is starting 2026 with high ambitions and high hopes to achieve them. Our first priority and largest focus is on the Summer Nationals, here on our home turf in Minneapolis. Many Unit members are already involved in the planning process, and we look to recruit many more to be volunteers for the many small but essential tasks involved with running a national tournament. As part of that focus on the big event in July, we are collecting names from the vast arena of unsanctioned clubs, with the idea to first introduce them to the duplicate setting through our local club games, and then entice them to show up at the Nationals for, at minimum, the July 10 free game for 0 to 5 players, with lunch provided. This innovative program will give out free plays, up to 4 per month, for people who have not yet become ACBL members, but are familiar with the game. We plan to reimburse the clubs for their standard game fee, which incidentally has remained stable due to the Unit covering special game upcharges. As a Unit we wish to take care of the clubs and managers that make our game possible throughout (nearly) the entire week.

More exciting news is coming from the western suburbs, where the West Metro Social Duplicate club has found an innovative learning model, and an eager crowd looking to improve their game with lessons and play combined. This model has excited Norrie Thomas to expand the number of days this learning program will be offered. Expect an announcement within the month about her new club, and the different ways she envisions bringing learning opportunities to the west metro area.

Besides these projects, we also have the work of the Minnesota Merger Committee to discuss. With the days already getting longer, there is a lot of work ahead for all of us. Many threads are coming together, with the focus on July, and the Summer Nationals. I sense a lot of energy and excitement within the bridge community. This is the year that Minnesota shines!

New Years Greetings
      --Keith Thompson, Unit 178 President

HERE IS TO MORE BRIDGE IN THE NEW YEAR
Make a New Year's Resolution that's easy to keep.

January 1 2026
OVERALL CLUB TABLES LAST MONTH UP +5.9%
Minnesota's monthly table count in December came to 683; that's up 38 tables from last December, or +5.9%.  The count is down from November's 842 club tables, but that's to be expected as there are a lot of holidays during December - plus the big Bridge Center of St Paul Holiday Sectional takes place in December.  The chart to your left is for club tables only - and does not include any tournament tables or online events, so the BCSP's four-day tournament takes quite a bite out of the monthly club table count.

Almost all of this year's extra tables in December came from Outstate Minnesota clubs.  The metro area saw 389 tables in December (vs 384 in 2024, or +1.3%), while outstate Minnesota had 294 tables in play during last month (vs 261 in 2024, or +12.6%).  The overall increase in December tables from one year ago is another indicator that the health of bridge in our state right now is doing well. . .and we can't have too many indications of that.
